Stranger Things S5 Art Makes Will The Main Character As Hawkins Falls

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Stranger Things season 4

An impressive new piece of Stranger Things season 5 fan art imagines Will as the main character as the town of Hawkins falls. After first hitting Netflix in 2016, Stranger Things returned with season 4 volume 1 this past May. The latest season introduces a new villain in the form of Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), a powerful interdimensional being hellbent on opening portals to the Upside Down so that the Mind Flayer can be unleashed unto the world.

Stranger Things season 4 volume 2 hit Netflix late last week, wrapping up the season with two supersized episodes. Much to the surprise of many fans, the finale saw Vecna succeed in his goal, with giant crevasses to the Upside Down opening up all throughout Hawkins. Much remains unknown about the upcoming season, but the Duffer Brothers have already confirmed that it will be the show’s last. Stranger Things season 5 is expected to bring back most of the key cast members from season 4, including Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Caleb McLaughlin, Gaten Matarazzo, Joe Keery, Sadie Sink, Maya Hawke, David Harbour, Winona Ryder, and Natalia Dyer, among others.

In an impressive new piece of fan art shared on Twitter, artist Axel Almirón (@almirondesign) imagines what a poster for Stranger Things season 5 could look like. The poster features the tagline, “Hawkins will fall,” and depicts the town seemingly overrun by Vecna. Will is front and center in the poster as the Mind Flayer ominously looms in the sky above him. The Duffer Brothers have already confirmed Will’s Stranger Things season 5 story will be far more prominent, and considering Will’s ending in season 4, Almirón’s poster may not be far off the mark. Will reveals to Mike in the season 4 finale that, not only has he retained part of his connection to the Mind Flayer, as was previously explored in season 2, but this connection tells him that Vecna is still alive. It remains to be seen how Will and his connection to the Mind Flayer will figure into the upcoming season, but it’s likely that Hawkins will become a central battleground in the events to come.

Despite his position as one of the core characters on the show, many fans have criticized Stranger Things‘ treatment of Will and the way he is often kept on the sidelines. After playing an important role in season 2, Will was less active in season 3, and although season 4 explored the character in some interesting new ways, he still largely took a back seat during much of the action. Will’s retained connection to the Mind Flayer, however, does hint that he may be the key to defeating Vecna and the other evil beings of the Upside Down in the highly anticipated Stranger Things season 5.
