Mediaweek reported on November 7, 2007, that WCBS-TV had hired Bartelstein as a weekend news anchor. Soon after, the station began airing advertising promotions showcasing him and mentioning a forthcoming feature article about his cancer illness. Cindy Adams of the New York Post reported on September 28, 2007, that Bartelstein was being treated for testicular cancer.

It was reported on August 12, 2010, that he would be joining WBBM-TV in Chicago as a morning news anchor. On July 3, 2011, it was reported that he would be leaving WBBM after only 10 months, effectively ending his broadcasting career. After retiring from a broadcasting career, he attended baseball umpire school and umpired in the Pecos League in the 2013 and 2014 seasons.
