Stephen Colbert seemed contrite in last night’s interview. The late show while discussing Kate Middleton’s recent cancer diagnosis. The late-night host responded to criticism he faced for making jokes about Middleton’s location just weeks before the Princess of Wales publicly announced her diagnosis.
“We do a lot of shows and I tell a lot of jokes, and I tell jokes about a lot of different things, mostly what everyone talks about.” Colbert on Monday late show. “And for the last six weeks or two months, everyone has been talking about the mystery of Kate Middleton’s disappearance from public life.”
Colbert added: “And two weeks ago, we made some jokes about that mystery and all the fru-fra that went along with the reports about it, and when I made those jokes, it upset some people, even before his diagnosis was revealed, and I can understand that.”
“Some of my jokes will upset people in the future,” he admitted. “But there is one standard I try to live up to, and that is to not make light of another person’s tragedy.”
“I don’t know if his prognosis is tragic. Regardless of what it is, many of us know that any cancer diagnosis of any kind is heartbreaking for the patient and their family,” Colbert noted.

However, in closing, the comedian stopped short of actually apologizing. “While I’m sure you don’t need it from me, I and everyone here at ‘The Late Show’ would like to express our good wishes and our sincere hope that your recovery is quick and complete.”
Colbert appeared to be referring to jokes he made on the March 13 episode of The late show. She humorously suggested that Middleton’s withdrawal from public view was related to rumors of her husband’s infidelity.
“The Kingdom has been in a lot of turmoil over the apparent disappearance of Kate Middleton,” Colbert joked in the episode. “Well, now Internet sleuths are guessing that Kate’s absence may be related to her husband and the future king of England, William, having an affair.”
“According to the tabloids, when Kate supposedly confronted him about it, he laughed and said he had nothing to do. “It’s always a good response when your wife accuses you of cheating.”
Middleton revealed her cancer diagnosis in a video posted on March 22. After this, many Internet users and celebrities publicly expressed their remorse for joking about her whereabouts in the previous weeks.
