Summary
- Sabine Wren’s potential to be a Jedi is not dependent on her Force-sensitivity, as shown by examples of non-Force-sensitive individuals who have become Jedi in the past.
- Sabine’s mastery of lightsaber combat suggests that her apprenticeship under Ahsoka Tano goes beyond just developing her skills with a lightsaber, implying that she may have unlocked her connection to the Force.
- Despite her uncertain Force-sensitivity, Sabine has the potential to commit to becoming a Jedi under Ahsoka’s guidance, as the Force resides in all living things according to Jedi teachings.
Star Wars has already revealed how Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) can be a Jedi in the upcoming Ahsoka show (even without the Force). With trailers having confirmed that Sabine Wren became Ahsoka Tano’s apprentice following the events of Star Wars Rebels, the major question has been whether the Mandalorian warrior and artist is Force-sensitive. While there are seeds of potential foreshadowing for Sabine having latent abilities within certain episodes of Rebels, it’s been proven elsewhere that wielding the Force isn’t necessarily a prerequisite for becoming a Jedi.
As seen in trailers for Ahsoka, Sabine refers to Tano (Rosario Dawson) as her master. Likewise, it seems as though Tano and Wren has some sort of falling out where Ahsoka made the decision to stop training Sabine. With Rebels having established that the Mandalorian was already proficient in lightsaber combat courtesy of Kanan Jarrus and her brief possession of the legendary Darksaber, it seems doubtful Ahsoka became Sabine’s master for lightsaber skills alone. Instead, there are implications that Sabine unlocked her connection the Force, though it doesn’t really matter as to whether or not she can be a Jedi in the upcoming Ahsoka show.
A Jedi Is Far More Than Just Someone Who Can Call On The Force
In the canonical short story “What A Jedi Makes” by author Michael Kogge featured in the Stories of Jedi and Sith collection, it’s proven by Jedi Master Yoda that Force-sensitivity isn’t the end all when it comes to following the Jedi path. In the story, Yoda inducts a young boy into the Jedi Order even though he can’t call on the Force. When the boy protests Yoda answers, “Then never a Jedi you will be, if that is what you believe.” When the boy asks what he means, he replies,
“Study you should, the Farseeker Lyr. No great power had he, yet from his ink sprang some of the Jedi’s greatest texts. For though the Jedi and the Force are one, the Force is not what makes a Jedi.”
While there were Jedi as powerful in the Force as Anakin Skywalker, it seems as though there were others in the Jedi Order on the other side of the spectrum with connections that weren’t as strong (at least externally). Likewise, the High Republic’s Jedi Master Sskeer was no less of a Jedi after he lost his connection to the Force, and it even became a benefit when the Nihil marauders began using creatures known as the Nameless who could incapacitate Force-sensitives and Sskeer was immune to their power. Likewise, Rogue One’s Chirrut Îmwe was certainly Force-attuned, while not being a Jedi himself.
Sabine Could Easily Commit To Become A Jedi Without Force Powers
Keeping the aforementioned examples in mind, It’s certainly possible for Sabine to have become a Jedi under Ahsoka’s tutelage even if her connection to the Force isn’t the same as typical Jedi seen on-screen. Kanan confirmed in Rebels that “The Force resides in all living things”, echoing Jedi teachings across the Star Wars timeline. Specifically referring to Sabine, Kanan believed it was Wren’s complicated past and Mandalorian upbringing that was blocking her connection to the Force, though how powerful a connection remains to be seen. Regardless, Sabine does have the canonical potential to become a Jedi in Ahsoka when the show premieres August 23rd (with or without the Force).
