During a new interview with The Guardian, Ahmed recalled all the backlash he was the subject of as the actor behind one of the most hated characters in the franchise.

Following 1999′s Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace, Ahmed says that he became the subject of fan campaign of abuse and death threats.

There came a point that he went to the Brooklyn Bridge, with every intention of ending it all.

“I’ll show all of you. I’ll show you what you’re doing to me. And when I’m gone, then you’ll feel exactly what I went through,” he says he remembers thinking.

In another podcast, which is dedicated to the redemption of the character, Ahmed says that he thought the role was a prank when it was first offered to him.

But then came the online hate.

“It was terrible,” he recalled. “It was the lowest I’ve ever been in my life.”
