Controversy
On June 3, 2013, British-American actress Jiah Khan committed suicide in her apartment in Mumbai. Four days later, her sister found a six-page handwritten letter in Jiah’s apartment in which Jiah had written about her troubled relationship with a boy. Later during investigation it was found that Suraj was dating her and this letter was pointing towards the relationship between Jiya and Suraj.

On 11 June 2013, Sooraj was arrested by Mumbai Police under section 306 for abetment of suicide. Two days later, Jiah Khan’s autopsy report was released which confirmed that her death was due to hanging and was not a case of murder. Then Suraj was sent on 14-day remand and taken to Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai. On 1 July 2013, he was granted bail by the Bombay High Court on a surety bond of Rs 50,000. A day later, the court ruled that Suraj was not responsible for Jiah’s death. A few months later, Jiah’s mother filed a petition for investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation and after almost a year, the Bombay High Court gave permission to the CBI to take over the case. On December 9, 2015, Suraj was interrogated by the CBI. Later, the CBI filed a supplementary charge sheet in the court, and Sooraj was charged under section 306 of the IPC for abetment of suicide. After a series of investigations over a few years, on 14 October 2017, Sooraj filed a petition in Bombay. High Court in which he requested to expedite the trial proceedings. In 2021, Jiah Khan suicide case was transferred to special CBI court. The judges of the Sessions Court said,
In the present case, the investigation is being conducted by the CBI/SCB (which) has filed a supplementary charge sheet. Special courts are set up exclusively to hear cases investigated by the CBI and a special judge is appointed to deal with the said cases. I do not have the power to deal with the cases filed by CBI. Therefore, in my view, it is necessary to transfer the present case to the CBI court.
Talking to journalists, Suraj said,
I am somewhat satisfied with this because my case should have been in the special CBI court from the beginning. Now that the matter is in the CBI court, I hope we will see its conclusion. If the court finds me guilty, I should be punished, but if it does not, I deserve to be acquitted of these charges.”
About seven-eight years after the case, Suraj spoke openly about the case in the media. In an interview he said,
Nobody understands that it was his decision to do this (commit suicide), you know, it was his choice. It was his mental state to do so. And I think it’s really unfair to blame anyone for this. Because what if I did that to myself today? Who will be blamed? I would blame the media for this because they have put a lot of pressure on me to write bad things about me but you can’t really blame other people. I think a person should be strong and more than the support of a lover, they need the support of family and I don’t know why family wasn’t there for him.
He continued,
I am actually silent because I respect that family. I respect what the family has gone through. But the media has become very irresponsible. They are only concerned with their TRP. Many times I was in the court and things were in my favor and a lot of journalists were there. I asked him, “Will you write this?” They told me they wouldn’t do it because it was a positive story and wouldn’t be tracked. This is unfair but I also believe in time.”
A special CBI court in Mumbai acquitted him in the Jiah Khan suicide case on 28 April 2023. By giving contradictory statements and hiding facts, Jiah Khan’s mother “damaged the prosecution’s case”, the court ruled. Jiah Khan’s mother Rabia Khan said in response to the verdict that she would appeal against the verdict in the High Court. He said,
The verdict is on alleged suicide, but I have always said that Jiah was murdered. This, in fact, strengthens my case.”
