Sona Mahapatra was born on Thursday, 17 June 1976 (age 47 years; as in 2023) in Cuttack city of Odisha. His zodiac sign is Gemini.
He did his schooling from Kendra Vidyalaya, Bhubaneswar. He did B.Tech in Instrumentation and Electronics Engineering from College of Engineering and Technology, Bhubaneswar and MBA in Marketing from Symbiosis Center for Management and HRD, Pune. He is trained in Indian classical music.

His father, Dilip Mohapatra, was an officer in the Indian Navy. And his mother’s name is Nayantara Mahapatra. He has two sisters, Madhumita Mahapatra and Pratichi Mahapatra (singer).
She met Ram Sampath for the first time in 2002. Both of them got married in 2005.

Sona Mohapatra started her career as a brand manager at Marico (Indian consumer goods and services company), where she managed brands like Parachute and Medicare. He quit his job and started looking for opportunities to make a career in the Indian music industry. He started his singing career by singing jingles for advertisements. Some of his famous works were Tata Salt – “Kal Ka Bharat Hai” and Unilever Close Up – ‘Paas Aao Na’ campaign. The song was recorded in multiple languages and aired in 13 countries for 4 consecutive years.

She made her Bollywood debut as a singer in 2006 with the song “Lori” from the film “Family”.
In 2007, she released her debut album “Sona” with Sony Records.
She has sung many hit songs including “I Hate You (Like I Love You),” “Naina,” “Chori Chori,” and “Bahara.” Of all his hit songs, “Ambarsariya” from “Fukrey” is his most famous song.

- In 2016, in an open letter on Facebook, she criticized IIT Bombay for its apparent sexism towards women artists. In his letter, he claimed that the institute had approached him to sing at its annual cultural fest, Mood Indigo. However, he stipulated that she should not perform alone but should collaborate with a male artiste.
- In 2018, during the ongoing MeToo movement in India, she accused Kailash Kher of sexual harassment and also termed Anu Malik as a ‘serial predator’.
- In 2018, she faced massive criticism in Odisha after singing the devotional song “Ahe Neela Saila”, which was written by the saint-poet, Bhakta Salabega in the 17th century. Oriya people said that he had terribly mispronounced many words in the song, including the poet’s name. Furthermore, they also questioned her choice of outfit for a devotional song. Responding to her haters, she tweeted that they should shut up, else she will get naked. His statement spread anger throughout the state. An FIR was registered against him and his effigies were burnt on the streets.
- In 2019, he attacked Salman Khan for criticizing Priyanka Chopra for leaving the film “Bharat (2019)”. After which he received a death threat from a fan of Salman. The next day, Sona shared screenshots of the troll, who apologized for his behavior towards Sona.
