Smita Gate was born on Wednesday, 16 March 1966 (age 55 years; as in 2021) in Pune. His zodiac sign is Pisces. He did his schooling from Central School Lohegaon, Pune from 1978 to 1982. He did his 12th class from Symbiosis College of Arts and Commerce, Pune. In 1981, he joined Nowrosji Wadia College, Pune. Later he did B.Sc. Did. in Microbiology at Garware College of Science and Arts, Pune in 1987. He is a postgraduate in sociology.

After divorcing Monisha Patil in 2005, Nitish Bhardwaj married Smita Gate on 14 March 2009. At that time Smita had also divorced her first husband. In an interview, Nitish while talking about his meeting with Smita said,
Initially we knew each other as friends. We have a mutual family friend who asked us to consider marrying each other. We thought about it and met a few times after that. We found that we were very compatible and so we are moving forward with marriage.
The couple is blessed with twin daughters; Devayani (name of a queen in Mahabharata) and Shivranjani (name of a raga).

In January 2022, Nitish and Smita ended their 12-year-long marriage.

In 1992, she became an IAS officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre. In February 2009, he was posted as the Executive Director of the Synthetic and Rayon Textiles Export Promotion Council (SRTEPC). Within a few months of joining, he discovered that there were some irregularities in the functioning of the department. He demanded setting up an inquiry commission to investigate the entire matter. No action was taken on his appeal and he was ordered back to his cadre in May 2010. In an interview, her husband, Nitish, said,
The order came while she was in Brazil and Argentina on an official visit. The SRTEPC Governing Council sent a letter to the Ministry of Textiles (MoT) and the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) saying it did not require Smita’s services. The ministry sent him back to Madhya Pradesh without asking any questions. We were really surprised to hear this. Smita was sent to SRTEPC on deputation. There is no provision in the rules for him to incorporate his own private company.
Smita filed an RTI application at its counter; Seeking details of his transfer. When her case was presented in CAT, judges Jog Singh and Sudhakar Mishra, dealing with the case, observed that she was on deputation, and did not join SRTEPC on her own volition. Smita’s lawyer said,
The kind of arguments and misrepresentations given by DoPT in the matter were shocking. Anywhere IAS officers cannot join any private company at their discretion only on NOC.
In 2015, he was appointed as the Managing Director of MP Financial Corporation in Indore.
Controversy
allegation of harassment
On 14 February 2024, Nitish Bhardwaj submitted a written complaint to Bhopal Police Commissioner Harinarayanachari Mishra, accusing him of harassment, unruly behavior and preventing him from seeing his children.
