Skal Labissiere is a Haitian basketball player. Skal Labissiere plays from the Power forward/center position for the Grises de Humacao of the Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN).
Early Life
On the 18th of March 1996, Skal Labissiere was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He is a Haitian by nationality and belongs to the African ethnicity. Currently, he is 27 years old and according to his astrological chart, he has a birth sign of Pisces.
He was born to his parents; Lesly Labissiere (father) and Ema Labissiere (mother). Meanwhile, Skal grew up with his two siblings whose names are Mallya Labissière and Elliott Labissière. His house was damaged during the 2010 Haiti earthquake while his mother and brother were inside. They were stuck there for three hours before being rescued. As a result, they relocated to Memphis.
He attended Evangelical Christian School and later transferred to Lausanne Collegiate School. He played college basketball at the University of Kentucky. Later, he entered the NBA draft in 2016, skipping his last three years of college eligibility.
Professional Career
Sacramento Kings
Skal Labissiere began his professional basketball career in 2016. The Phoenix Suns selected him with the 28th overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft in June 2016 and is the highest-drafted Haitian player since Samuel Dalembert in 2001. On July 15, his draft rights were sold to the Sacramento Kings.
On November 5, 2016, he made his NBA debut, scoring eight points and grabbing three rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench in a 117-91 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks. He scored a season-high 12 points against the Denver Nuggets on February 23, 2017, in his ninth game of the season.
On March 15, 2017, he scored 21 of his career-high 32 points in the fourth quarter of the Kings’ 107-101 win over Phoenix, becoming the first rookie from the 2016 draft class to do so. During his first season, he had various stints with the NBA Development League’s Reno Bighorns. He was assigned to the Reno Bighorns on December 5, 2017.
In a 131-111 loss to the Charlotte Hornets on January 2, 2018, Labissière had 17 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. He had a season-high 23 points in a 112-107 loss to Charlotte on January 22, 2018.
Portland Trail Blazers
Labissière was dealt to the Portland Trail Blazers for Caleb Swanigan on February 7, 2019. He began the season finale for Portland on April 10 while the team rested its rotation players for the playoffs. In addition, he recorded 29 points and 15 rebounds in 40 minutes of action, helping the Blazers overcome a 28-point deficit to win 136-131.
He and monetary considerations were transferred to the Atlanta Hawks on February 6, 2020, in exchange for a future-protected second-round draft pick. Moreover, he did not re-sign with Atlanta at the end of the season and became a free agent.
Westchester Knicks
He signed with the New York Knicks on December 9, 2020. Moreover, he was released two days later. Then, he was assigned to the Westchester Knicks, the Knicks’ NBA G League. On February 10, 2021, he made his Westchester debut.
Cangrejeros de Santurce, Capitanes de Ciudad de México, and Grises de Humacao
He signed with the San Antonio Spurs for the NBA Summer League in 2021. Moreover, he signed with Cangrejeros de Santurce of the Baloncesto Superior Nacional on March 10, 2022. He was acquired by the Capitanes de Ciudad de México on March 3, 2023. Later, he joined Grises de Humacao of the Puerto Rican League on April 26, 2023.
