Singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot dies at 84

Canadian folk musician Gordon Lightfoot has sadly passed away at the age of 84.

The singer-songwriter rose to fame in the ’60s and ’70s with hits like “Early Morning Rain” and “If You Could Read My Mind.”

“It is with deep sadness that we confirm that Gordon Meredith Lightfoot has passed away,” the statement on his website read.

Gordon died peacefully on Monday, May 1, 2023 at 7:30 pm at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. He died of natural causes. He was 84 years old. He is survived by his wife Kim Hasse, six children: Fred, Ingrid, Eric, Galen, Miles and Meredith, as well as several grandchildren.”

Gordon made his first appearance on the US Billboard chart in 1971, when “If You Could Read My Mind” reached number five. She received five Grammy nominations during her career.

Gordon was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1986.

“We have lost one of our greatest singer-songwriters,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote in Twitter. “Gordon Lightfoot captured the spirit of our country in his music and, in doing so, helped shape Canada’s soundscape. May his music continue to inspire future generations and may his legacy live on forever.”
