Controversy
Arrested in prostitution racket case
In a police raid in 2014, Shweta was arrested along with a businessman in a sex racket case from a hotel in Hyderabad, Telangana. According to media sources, Shweta apparently got involved in prostitution due to her wrong career choices and financial constraints. According to the media, during police interrogation, Shweta said,
I had no money and had to support my family and other good works, and with all other doors closed, I was encouraged by some people to turn to prostitution to earn money. But I am not like other actresses who find themselves helpless and resort to prostitution for financial security when there is no other option.
After hearing his statement, many Indian celebrities like Deepika Padukone and Shweta Tiwari came out in his support. However, he has refused to make any such statement. He said,
The problem with our society is that everyone was supporting me till the time I was given sympathy and everyone kept saying ‘oh’, ‘poor girl’, ‘so sad’ etc. But, as soon as people understand that they were lured into a false statement and that a 23 year old girl can be strong and stand on her own feet without any sympathy, then the society thinks that she is lying?? If the news was like that then what is my fault? I can’t force anyone to like me or respect me. These occur naturally. What happened was beyond my control.”
During the hearing of her case in the Hyderabad sessions court, her lawyer requested to acquit her of all charges as no relevant evidence was available against her. On 5 December 2014, he was given a clean chit by a sessions court in Hyderabad and was sent to the rescue home ‘Prajwal’. Later when she was asked about the businessman who was/were present with her in the hotel room, Shweta replied,
Who is this business man in my life? I’m just as curious as you all! So, here’s the puzzle: Why were the names of the businessmen caught ‘with me’ not revealed? Clue: Were there any business people in the room with me during my detention? Think think. prove it!”
Journalists even asked her what she was doing in the hotel if she was not involved in the racket. She replied that she had gone there to attend an award show and her stay was arranged by the show organizers. Later in an interview he said,
Anyway, much has been said, much has been heard. I have gone through the entire incident in full and I disregard all those who raised false statements and encouraged misrepresentation of stories without verifying its authenticity. I’m ignoring because this episode doesn’t deserve any more attention!”
