In 1980, when Shivangi was shooting for the Hindi film ‘Kismat’, she first met Shakti Kapoor on the sets of the film. Initially they became friends and later fell in love with each other. They dated secretly for about two years and then decided to get married. Shivangi’s parents were strict and when she expressed her desire to marry Shakthi, her parents locked her in a room. He did not like Shakthi as he was 12 years older than Shivangi and did not like Shakthi’s negative roles in films. On 13 December 1982, Shakti and Shivangi got married in court. During an interview, Shakti recalled those days and said,

Shivangi and I eloped and got married. He is Maharashtrian and I am Punjabi. I played the villain and my reputation was not good. Her family members were not ready for the marriage, so we had to run away. She was 18 when we got married (in 1982). When she was 19, my son Siddhant was born. Shivangi’s mother spoke to her for the first time after our marriage when she came to visit him at Breach Candy Hospital.

Shakti further said,

Shivangi’s family did not agree with our relationship. When my father Sikandarlal Kapoor came to know about it in Delhi, he decided not to talk to me. My mother asked him to meet that girl once. As soon as he saw Shivangi, who is 10-12 years younger to me, he felt like a very sweet child. She sang two lines and my father stood up and asked how she sings so well. I told him that Lata ji was his cousin, he stood up and said, “Teri sab ghaltiyan maaf, because you got married in such a big family.” He asked her to sing Lata ji’s song and told that he is a big fan of her. He got emotional as soon as Shivangi sang.
