Sheikh Darvesh Saheb aka Sheikh Darvesh Sahib aka Dr Shaik Darvesh Saheb was born on Friday, 10 July 1964 (59 years; as of 2023) in Besta Veedhi village in Badvel Municipality of Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh, India. His zodiac sign is Cancer. He did his schooling in Telugu medium at Government Junior College, Porumamilla, Andhra Pradesh. He later pursued Bachelor’s degree of Science (BSc) in agriculture at Sri Venkateswara Agricultural College, Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh and Master’s degree of Science (MSc) in agriculture at the same college under ex-Dean of Agriculture at Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU), Dr. T. Yallamanda Reddy. He later pursued his PhD (Doctorate) in Agronomy at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Delhi. While studying at IARI, he started preparing for Indian Civil Services and cracked the UPSC examination in 1990. He later pursued a degree in the Post Graduate Diploma in Financial Management (PGDFM).

Career

After clearing the UPSC examination in 1990, he was allotted Kerala cadre in the Indian Police Services (IPS) Officer on 16 September 1991. He started off at Nedumangad as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), and after completing two years of probation, he was confirmed as an IPS Officer on 16 September 1993. He later served as the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Wayanad, Kasaragod, Kannur, Palakkad, Railways and State Special Branch. He also served as Commandant in Malabar Special Police (MSP) and Kerala Armed Police (KAP) 2nd Battalion. He has also served as Governor’s Aide-De-Camp (ADC) and as part of United Nation’s Peace Keeping mission in Kosovo. He also served as Kochi City Police Commissioner in SP rank.

He later served as the Assistant Director and Deputy Director of Information Technology at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPPNA), Hyderabad. He was the IG at SBCID, Police Headquarters, Thiruvananthapuram Range, Thrissur Range and Armed Police Battalion. He also worked as Additional Excise Commissioner and Director of Kerala Police Academy. After being promoted as ADGP, he served at the Police Headquarters, Vigilance, Crime Branch, Northern Region and Law and Order departments. He has also served as the Director of Kerala Police Academy and Jail Superintendent and the head of the Fire and Rescue Services. On 1 July 2023, he assumed the office of the Director of General Police (DGP) of Kerala after his appointment on 27 June 2023. He was set to retire on 31 July 2024; however, after his appointment as DGP, he would get a two-year term, extending his retirement to 30 June 2025.

  • His appointment as DGP, Kerala came as a surprise for many police officers as he was superseded for the post of DGP; however, senior bureaucrats in Kerala claimed that Kerala Chief Ministser Pinarayi Vijayan chose him due to his clean record, and the ruling party CPI(M) wanted to woo Muslim voters.
  • He filed a case against former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, related to sexual harassment, after three police officials had refused to do so on the basis of allegations.
