Sharad Arvind Bobde belongs to a family of eminent lawyers. His father, Arvind Srinivas Bobde was a renowned lawyer and Advocate General of Maharashtra. His mother’s name is Mukta Arvind Bobde. His elder brother, Vinod Arvind Bobde (deceased) was a senior lawyer in the Supreme Court of India and a constitutional expert. His grandfather was also a lawyer.

Sharad Arvind Bobde joined the BAR Association of Maharashtra in 1978. He practiced at the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court and also appeared before the Principal Bench of the Bombay High Court. In 1998, after 20 years of practice, he was designated as senior counsel. On 29 March 2000, he was elevated to the Principal Bench of the Bombay High Court as an Additional Judge. He served as an Additional Judge in the Bombay High Court for 12 years.

On 15 October 2012, Bobde was appointed as the Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court; After serving as an Additional Judge in the Bombay High Court for 12 years. He served as the Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court until 11 April 2013, after which he was nominated as a judge of the Supreme Court by Altamas Kabir, the then Chief Justice of India. On 12 April 2013, he was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court by the then President of India Pranab Mukherjee.

On 18 October 2019, Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi initiated the process of appointing the next Chief Justice of India by sending a letter to Union Law Minister of India Ravi Shankar Prasad; They are demanding the appointment of the next CJI and recommending Bobde’s name as his successor. Gogoi is scheduled to retire on 17 November 2019, and Bobde will take over as the 47th Chief Justice of India from 18 November 2019 for 17 months.
