Shailja Kumari was born on Monday, 24 September 1962 (age 57 years; as in 2019) in Chandigarh. His zodiac sign is Libra. She did her schooling from Convent of Jesus and Mary, Delhi. She went back to Chandigarh to pursue MA and MPhil from Panjab University.

In 1990, Shailaja Kumari joined the Indian National Congress (INC). In the same year, she was appointed as the Joint Secretary of Mahila Congress. In 1991, she was elected MP from Sirsa Lok Sabha constituency of Haryana. He was appointed as the Deputy Minister of the Union Ministry of Education and Culture and Human Resource Development by the PV Narasimha Rao government from July 1992 to September 1995. In September 1995, he was promoted as Union Minister of State (MoS). Department of Education and Culture and Ministry of Human Resource Development.

In 1996, she was re-elected as MP from Sirsa and was appointed as the secretary and spokesperson of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) from 1996 to 2004. In 2004, he contested the general elections from Ambala Cantt Lok Sabha constituency. Haryana won more. Lok Sabha constituency. He was appointed as the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Housing and Urban Abatement by the Manmohan Singh government. In 2007, he was appointed as the President of the 21st Governing Council of UN-Habitat for 2 years.

In 2009, she was re-elected to the 15th Lok Sabha from Ambala Cantt. On 31 May 2009, he was appointed as the Minister of Housing and Urban Estate Abolition and Tourism. On 19 January 2011, he was given additional charge of the Ministry of Culture. On 28 October 2012, following a cabinet reshuffle, he was appointed as the Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment. In April 2014, she was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Haryana. In 2014, she contested the general elections, but lost to Ratan Lal Kataria of BJP. On 4 September 2019, Shailaja was appointed President of Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) by Sonia Gandhi.

  • On 11 March 2011, Shailaja was issued a notice by the High Courts of Punjab and Haryana. He was charged with forgery, fabrication, criminal intimidation and criminal conspiracy. The notice said that he had instigated members of the Valmiki community against Jat leaders in the Mirchpur case. The notice also accused him of intimidating and pressurizing the undertrials and forcing them to sign blank and non-judicial papers to save themselves from litigation.
  • On 6 October 2013, Shailaja inaugurated the “Kalka-Sainagar Shirdi Superfast Express” and was traveling in it from Kalka to Chandigarh. As the train passed through Manakpur village, an unknown assailant threw a brick through the window. The brick hit Shailja’s arm and she got injured. The next day when he was asked about the incident, he replied-

    I have never faced such situations in my political life and the people of Haryana Congress are not only working against me but are also trying to scare me.

  • On 12 October 2019, less than a month after taking charge of the Haryana Congress, he expelled 16 members of the Haryana Congress. In a statement he said-
