Schitt’s Creek: 10 Small Details Fans May Have Missed

Thanks to streaming giants like Netflix, fans are able to binge and rewatch Schitt’s Creek’s six seasons again and again. Aside from counting the actual number of times Alexis says “Ew, David,” fans are also picking up small details that they didn’t notice the first time around.

Everything from the sweaters David wears to Stevie’s burst of confidence after performing in Cabaret was noticed, but there are smaller, background details that have been caught by eagle-eyed fans. It’s the small details that make Schitt’s Creek the success that it is because fans love the consistency in characters’ storylines.

Eye Spy Alexis’ Pilot Dress

In the pilot, Alexis is wearing a soft pink cocktail dress while running through her family’s mansion, gathering her things. The government had just arrived to seize the Roses property and Alexis was all types of angry.

Looking back on the Alexis fans met in the pilot as opposed to season 6’s Alexis, she was a different person. Alexis transformed into a more responsible and level-headed woman compared to her days in season 1. Shedding even more of her past life, Alexis gave Twyla a bag of her old clothes. Ironically, one of the first dresses that Twyla pulls out was the pink dress Alexis wore in the pilot. That dress alone brought Alexis’ storyline full circle because it was a small reminder of where Alexis used to be and how far she’s come.

A Very Special Poster

Open Mic Night was a monumental moment in Patrick and David’s relationship. Not only were they bringing business to their store, but Patrick sang a love ballad to David in front of most of the town. David was a little embarrassed by the event but after seeing Patrick sing his feelings, David’s mood shifted.

In later episodes, Patrick moved into a new apartment where he and David made it cozy. In a few scenes, fans noticed the Open Mic flyer framed in Patrick’s kitchen. The night was so important to him that he turned it into art.

Antonio Was Spotted In Rose Apothecary

In ‘Roadkill,’ David sees his old boss, Wendy, at the local flea market where they’re both selling similar products. David couldn’t help but feel like Wendy was taking his ideas, and after seeing her business partner Antonio, David felt conned in more ways than one.

Antonio was the spitting image of David; David noted that he looked familiar but it could have just been because they had the same fashion sense. However, eagle-eyed fans realized David did see Antonio before the flea market. Four episodes prior (‘Rock On!’), Antonio can be seen in the background of Rose Apothecary browsing about.

Gary Does It All In Schitt’s Creek

Gary taking David on his drivers test and later meeting Alexis at school on Schitt's Creek

In season 3, David met his driving instructor, Gary. David was horrified to take his driver’s test again because he’s failed it so many times before. But after meeting Gary, David realized he didn’t have anything to worry about. Gary was too busy with his own schedule to worry about David.

Funny enough, Gary rolls around again in season 4 as the student who introduces Alexis to Elmdale College. Since his appearance in season 3 was so brief, it was easy to miss that he was the same person as the student in season 4.

The Apartment That Alexis Looks At Could Have Belonged To Bob’s Brother

In season 1, Johnny is forced to speak at Bob’s brother’s funeral. Bob claimed his brother died in some kind of freak accident, but the story aligns more with suicide. respectfully. Bob noted that his brother was found hanging by his ceiling fan, which made Johnny feel uneasy.

Later in season 2, Alexis and David go apartment hunting where Alexis found a dreamy apartment in Schitt’s Creek. But with Ray as the realtor for the apartment, he told them that someone had died in the apartment but not to worry because the ceiling fan had been replaced. Could this mean that Alexis and David were standing in Bob’s brother’s old apartment? Schitt’s Creek isn’t that big of a town; it seems more than just a coincidence.

Artie Wasn’t The Only One To Call Alexis By A Nickname

Alexis and Artie on a date at Cafe Tropical

When Alexis and Ted broke up, Alexis dove headfirst into dating as a way to stay busy and keep her mind off of Ted. Moira, in particular, was proud of Alexis for playing the field instead of sulking at home. That is until they found out that her new boyfriend, Artie, was Johnny’s age.

To make matters even more awkward, he called Alexis “Lexie,” which didn’t sit right with David. Artie isn’t the only one who has called Alexis a nickname while in Schitt’s Creek. If fans can remember, at the start of Ted and Alexis’ relationship he too called her “Lex.” By Artie calling Alexis “Lex,” was this a subtle nod to pet names at the beginning of relationships?

The Receipt

David’s birthday was also his first date with Patrick. Adorably, David wasn’t sure if it was a date-date or a friendly business date. When Stevie showed up for dinner, Patrick became perplexed and went to the restroom. This behavior led Stevie to believe Patrick planned this evening as a date. To prove her point, she noted that if Patrick’s gift to David was sentimental — it was a date. And she was right. Inside a blue bag was the receipt to the first sale that Rose Apothecary ever had. That was the sweetest gift David could have asked for.

After ‘Grad Night,’ fans spotted the framed piece of paper hanging on the motel’s wall by David and Alexis’ bathroom, and later on a side table.

One thing that fans slowly picked up on during rewatches was the Rose kids not understanding metaphors. There were a handful of metaphors thrown around by Johnny and Moira and the kids never understood what their parents were trying to say. In one scene, Johnny compares their workdays to time in the salt mine, but David had no idea what working in the salt mine meant. In another scene, Moira said there was an “elephant in the room” to which David looked around the room searching for an elephant. These small moments are just a peek into Alexis and David’s mental capacity for fitting in with generic small talk.

Gwen Came Back!

Gwen was spotted at David and Patrick's wedding in Schitt's Creek

Bob and Gwen were one of the first couples Johnny and Moira met in Schitt’s Creek. Gwen was only shown a few times in the series and that’s mainly because she left Bob for their pastor after decades of marriage.

Bob was a wreck when Gwen left and hoped that she would come back after leaving him and taking the house; he even left a space in the garage open for her car. No one had much hope for Bob and Gwen, but fans spotted her with the Jazzagals at David and Patrick’s wedding! Perhaps she did come back.

Johnny’s Consistency With Caps Lock

Johnny and Stevie looking at the sold out motel sheet on Schitt's Creek

Part of what makes a great show is consistency. After six seasons, it’s easy to forget small facts about the characters (interests, allergies, hobbies, etc…), but Schitt’s Creek kept a close eye on consistency.

When Johnny began working at the motel, he had issues with the computer and didn’t know how to use it. He told Stevie that whenever he types, the words are in all capitals. In a later episode, Johnny is excited when the motel is sold out, but when the camera pans to the computer, some names are written normally while some are in all capitals. The names in all caps are a direct callback to his issues with the keyboard.
