Being inclined towards sports since a young age, Saumya grew up playing cricket with thapi thapi (a wooden stick used to wash clothes under the tap) and paper balls. Soumya, who lived in a joint family in her residence in Shahjahanabad, old Bhopal, often watched cricket on television in her childhood. Soon, the thapi thapi was replaced with a plastic bat and Soumya started playing mohalla cricket with boys from her area. According to her father, Soumya would often come home and complain about the boys who refused to include her in their team. Later, her family shifted to Gautam Nagar, New Bhopal, where Soumya started playing cricket in a ground. After seeing his passion for the game, his elder sister took him to the Arera Cricket Academy at the Old Campion grounds in Bhopal for coaching. Suresh Chainani, the cricket coach at the academy, who was worried about girls dropping out, refused to train Soumya. Frustrated with the coach’s refusal, Soumya cried continuously for two days and later went to the academy again and requested the coach to take her in. Eventually the coach agreed to train him during the summer vacation. At that time Soumya was 11 years old. The coach groomed Soumya as an off-spinner before giving her batting training.
Meanwhile, an inter-club match is organized at the academy, where Soumya gets a chance to showcase her fielding abilities. He performed very well in the match and took two catches in the game. For the first three years, Soumya trained at the academy along with the boys. Eventually, he caught the attention of the state selectors, who included him in the Madhya Pradesh Under-23 team at the age of 13.

She came to me and told me that she would sit out because her team should not be disqualified and they should win. We won the match but his team spirit told us about his love for winning.”
