Sarbananda Sonova is an Indian politician, consultant and agriculturist. He is the 14th Chief Minister of Assam and is known as the Jatiya Nayak of Assam. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and represents Majuli constituency in Assam.

Sarbananda Sonowal was born on Wednesday, 31 October 1962 (age 60 years; as of 2023) in Muluk village, located in Dibrugarh district of Assam. Their zodiac sign is Scorpio. He had his primary education at Muluk Gaon Primary School in Dibrugarh and attended Bindhakata Middle English School till class six. Later, he completed his schooling from Don Bosco High School, Dibrugarh. He studied Bachelor of Arts (English Hons) from Dibrugarh Hanumanbux Surajmall Kanoi College under Dibrugarh University. After graduation, he obtained LLB from Dibrugarh University and a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from Gauhati University.

In 1992, Sonowal became the president of the All Assam Students Union, the oldest student body in Assam until 1999. Later, in 2001, he became a member of Assam Gana Parishad (AGP). He was elected as MLA of Assam Legislative Assembly from Moran constituency. In 2004, he was elected as the Lok Sabha member for Moran constituency of Assam, but in 2009, he lost the Lok Sabha election from Dibrugarh. By the end of 2011 he resigned from Assam Gana Parishad (AGP).

Sarbananda Sonowal joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2011. He was appointed Assam President of BJP. Later the same year, he was appointed as the national executive member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Later, he became the state spokesperson and general secretary of the Assam Bharatiya Janata Party. In 2012, he was appointed state president of Assam Bharatiya Janata Party. He was elected as the Member of Parliament of the 16th Lok Sabha from Lakhimpur constituency in 2014. In 2014, he was appointed as the Union Minister of State-Independent Charge of the Republic of India. He resigned from the Lok Sabha in 2016. Later, in the same year, he became the Chief Minister of Assam on 19 May 2016 as a BJP candidate. He was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly from Majuli constituency. On 24 May 2016, Sarbananda Sonowal was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Assam as the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance won the majority in the state. In 2021, he won the Assam Legislative elections from Majuli constituency and also helped the BJP achieve new heights. In 2021, he was appointed as the Cabinet Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and also given charge of the Ministry of AYUSH.

- Sarbananda Sonowal represented India at the Eastern Economic Forum, 2023 in Vladivostok.
- On 12 July 2005, he filed a case to strike down the IMDT Act 1983, which described methods to search and deport immigrants from Bangladesh to Assam. Sonowal described the Act as “wholly arbitrary, unfair and discriminatory against a section of the citizens of India, making it impossible for citizens living in Assam to secure detection and deportation of foreigners from Indian soil.” Talking about the Act, Sonowal said,
The IMDT Act is only encouraging vote bank politics without solving the problem of illegal immigrants, the Assam government had said while supporting the law saying it is equity.
The Supreme Court directed that all tribunals constituted under the IMDT Act will “cease to function” with immediate effect as the parent Act has been declared unconstitutional. The Court said that the cases pending before the tribunals will be transferred to the tribunals under the Foreigners Act.
