Sonowal described the Act as “wholly arbitrary, unfair and discriminatory against a section of the citizens of India, making it impossible for citizens living in Assam to secure detection and deportation of foreigners from Indian soil.” Talking about the Act, Sonowal said,

The IMDT Act is only encouraging vote bank politics without solving the problem of illegal immigrants, the Assam government had said while supporting the law saying it is equity.

The Supreme Court directed that all tribunals constituted under the IMDT Act will “cease to function” with immediate effect as the parent Act has been declared unconstitutional.
