Sanjeev Jeeva was an Indian gangster who was murdered in broad daylight at Kaiserbagh court in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, 6 June 2023. He was suspected of having links with the murder of senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Brahm Dutt Dwivedi. He was a close associate of Indian gangster and politician Mukhtar Ansari.

Kidnapping, Ransom, Robbery and Fraud: The Rise of Sanjeev Jeeva
Sanjeev Maheshwari alias “Jeeva” had prior experience working as a compounder in a dispensary in the 1990s. At that time, they kidnapped the dispensary owner and demanded a huge amount of money as ransom. After this incident, he got involved in various additional criminal activities, thereby increasing the name of Sanjeev Jeeva in the world of gangsters. Later, he was involved in the kidnapping of a Kolkata businessman’s son and demanded Rs 2 crore in ransom. He also became a member of Nazim gang of Haridwar, Satendra Barnala gang and many other gangs. He and his criminal gang engaged in acts of murder, robbery, extortion, kidnapping, robbery and fraud. More than 24 police cases are registered against Sanjeev Jeeva in police stations of areas like Muzaffarnagar, Shamli, Ghazipur, Farrukhabad and Hardwar in Uttar Pradesh. Police have registered cases against Sanjeev Jeeva more than 22 times under the Gangster Act 1986. Not only this, his assets worth more than Rs 4 crore were also confiscated under various provisions of the Act.

Brahm Dutt Dwivedi, BJP MLA from Farrukhabad, was murdered on 10 February 1997. According to his son Sunil Dutt, in an interview in 2017, his father was murdered while he was sitting in his car after attending a tilak ceremony. City Kotwali area of Farrukhabad district. His security guard BK Tiwari was killed and his driver Rinku was injured in the attack. On July 17, 2003, the CBI court in Lucknow sentenced Sanjeev Jeeva and former Samajwadi Party MLA Vijay Singh to life imprisonment for their involvement in the case. Both men appealed the decision to the High Court. In 2017, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad HC upheld the trial court’s decision. As a result of the murder, Jeeva developed a close relationship with another famous gangster, Munna Bajrangi. After this, in 2005, the police had accused both Bajrangi and Jeeva of being involved in the murder of six people including BJP MLA from Ghazipur Krishnanand Rai.
Closeness to Mukhtar Ansari

According to many reports, Sanjeev Jeeva was close to Mukhtar Ansari. On 29 November 2005, BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai was murdered in mafia style. It was said that Rai’s murder was a result of his defeat at the hands of Afzal Ansari in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections when Rai emerged the winner in 2002. The names who were said to be involved in the murder of Krishnanand Rai were Mukhtar Ansari, Afzal Ansari, Munna Bajrangi, and Sajeev Jeeva. However, in 2019, the Delhi court acquitted all the accused.

In 2019, Maheshwari, along with co-accused Mukhtar Ansari and his brother Afzal Ansari, was acquitted by a Delhi court on charges of murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai and six others. These results were due to the lack of cooperation of eyewitnesses as they turned hostile during the proceedings. Krishnanand Rai, former MLA of Mohammadabad, was victorious over Afzal Ansari in the 2002 assembly elections. On 29 November 2005, Rai and six others were tragically killed when a group of persons armed with automatic and semi-automatic weapons stopped their vehicle and opened fire on them.
Murder of businessman Amit Dixit
Jeeva was additionally charged with the murder of businessman Amit Dixit, also known as Goldie, in 2017. After a thorough investigation, the court sentenced him and three other persons to life imprisonment. As a result, Jeeva is lodged in Lucknow jail. However, there are allegations that he continued to carry out the activities of his gang even while behind bars. His gang reportedly consists of more than 35 members.

When Sanjeev Jeeva and Munna Bajrangi were in jail, their focus was on various properties in western Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. His excessive involvement and interest in these properties did not please gangster Sushil Mooch, leading to a rivalry between the two gangs. The clash between the two sides escalated over a valuable property near the transport station in Haridwar, resulting in several deaths.
Death
In 2021, Sanjeev Jeeva’s wife Payal Maheshwari wrote to the then Chief Justice of India seeking security for her husband Sanjeev Maheshwari alias Jeeva as she feared that Jeeva’s life was in danger. However, their fears came true on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, when Sanjeev Jeeva was allegedly shot dead by unidentified assailants inside the SC/ST Court in Lucknow. Two police constables during the attack; Kamlesh and Lal Mohammed, a six-year-old girl and an 18-month-old boy were also injured. Police have managed to catch one of the attackers, who has been identified as Vijay Yadav and he is currently being interrogated as part of the investigation.
According to reports, Jeeva was called to the Lucknow court for hearing of the case, when unknown assailants dressed as lawyers opened fire on Jeeva.

- In the year 2022, Sanjeev Jeeva was caught by Uttar Pradesh Police with AK-47 rifle and about 1300 cartridges.
- Sanjeev Jeeva was completely shocked by the murder of Munna Bajrangi in Baghpat jail district of Uttar Pradesh in 2018. He aspired to take a powerful position and become a don. Even after going to jail, he became a threat to many people. He reportedly operated his gang’s activities while behind bars.
- The government has recently confiscated about 8 bighas (about 5 acres) of land from Sanjeev Jeeva and his wife Payal Maheshwari. The land located at Police Station Adarsh Mandi and Sadar Kotwali was divided into two parts. The estimated value of the land is said to be around Rs 3.5 lakh. 1.86 crores. According to Amar Ujala, the wheat crop grown in the field was auctioned for Rs 20 thousand. 9,000, and the proceeds were deposited in the government account. Sanjeev Jeeva, his wife and their children were listed as the owners of 21 bighas of land in Adampur village. He had purchased this property in the name of his wife and sons.
- Sanjeev Jeeva’s wife Payal was a candidate on Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) ticket in the 2017 assembly elections. Unfortunately he had to face defeat in the elections.
- Sanjeev Jeeva was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Brahma Dutt Dwivedi, but he was acquitted in several other cases.
- The hearing of three cases against him was still pending when he was shot dead inside a Lucknow court on 6 June 2023.
