Sanjay Raut belongs to Somvanshi Kshatriya Pathare caste. His parents are Rajaram Raut and Savita Rajaram Raut. His younger brother Sunil Raut is also a politician from Shiv Sena.

On 16 February 1993, he married Varsha Raut (teacher). They have two daughters, Purvashi Raut and Vidhita Raut.

Sanjay Raut was first elected to the Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra in 2000. He was appointed as the leader of Shiv Sena in 2005. He was a member of the Committee on Home Affairs and the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Civil Aviation since October 2005. As of May 2009. In 2010, Raut was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra for a second term. In 2010, he was appointed as a member of the Consumer Affairs, Food, Public Distribution Committee and Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Power. On 20 November 2012, following the Mumbai lockdown following the death of Bal Thackeray, two women were arrested for Facebook comments against the lockdown. The women were both 21 years old and one of them had commented on a post and the other woman had liked the comment. After the arrest, Raut said that Shiv Sena supports the arrest of the women as their remarks could have created a law-and-order situation. He had to face a lot of criticism on this statement.

On 13 April 2015, several people and political parties accused Raut of trying to incite communal tension. The allegation comes after an article in Saamana (Shiv Sena’s mouthpiece) written by Sanjay Raut said that voting rights of Muslims should be canceled to ensure that they are used for vote bank politics. Was not done for. Many people said that they were disgusted to hear such a thing in a country like India which is a democratic country and not a Taliban state.

On 24 August 2017, Sanjay Raut threatened Nayapadmasagarji Maharajsaheb (Jain monk) to file a complaint against him for violating the election code of conduct, calling him a terrorist and comparing him to Islamic preacher Zakir Naik. His statement comes after Nayapadmasagarji Maharajsaheb urged the Jain community to support the BJP and move towards a meat-free society. The All India Jain Minority Cell criticized Raut’s statement and said that they were extremely saddened and hurt by his remarks.

On April 15, 2019, during the Ram Navami celebrations, he had created a controversy by saying – “There is always a fear of the code of conduct. However, to hell with the law! We are the kind of people who prefer to say what is in our hearts and minds rather than stifle it. The implications of the model code of conduct will be taken into account.”

On 25 October 2019, when Maharashtra Assembly election results were declared and saw a decline in BJP’s numbers, Sanjay Raut wore a watch locket (NCP’s party symbol) and smelled a lotus flower (BJP’s party symbol). Tweeted a picture of a tiger. Raut captioned the picture – “Don’t mind it’s Diwali.” However, BJP members said the picture was bleak.

It didn’t take me even five minutes to finalize him because no one can play the role better than him.

In November 2019, after the Maharashtra Assembly elections, Shiv Sena and BJP were unable to decide on government formation, seat-sharing formula and the appointment of the next Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Sanjay Raut being the spokesperson of Shiv Sena expressed his opinion against BJP and said that the Chief Minister of Maharashtra will be from Shiv Sena and if BJP does not agree, then Shiv Sena has other options to form the government and become the next Chief Minister of Maharashtra. In June 2023, Sanjay Raut initiated legal proceedings against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kirit Somaiya by filing a defamation case in the Mulund magistrate court. Raut alleged that Somaiya had made several allegations against him through social media posts accusing him of being involved in several fraudulent activities. These posts were made in the year 2022 on August 9, August 24, January 22 and June 13. Raut claimed that Somaiya’s intention behind these statements was to harm Raut’s reputation. Notably, one of Somaiya’s tweets accused Raut of being involved in the Rs 100 crore Covid center scam and suggested that Raut should be jailed. Raut’s petition highlighted that these defamatory statements, which had no factual basis, had received wide circulation through various publications. As a result, Raut’s reputation and goodwill suffered considerable damage.
