Sandeep Reddy Vanga is an Indian director, writer and editor, who predominantly works in Telugu and Hindi films. He rose to fame after directing his first Telugu feature film Arjun Reddy (2017). In 2019, he remade Arjun Reddy in Hindi language titled ‘Kabir Singh’, which is one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of all time.

Growing up, Sandeep was a complete film buff and used to watch the first-day first-show of Chiranjeevi’s films in theaters with his brother. Talking about this in an interview he said,
The fans used to make so much noise that it became difficult to hear the dialogues. You just went for the experience.”
He did his schooling at Platinum Jubilee High School, Warangal till class 8 and then moved to Hyderabad, where he studied from class 9 to class 12 at Siddhartha High School. Sandeep was good at studies in school and his parents wanted him to pursue medicine or engineering. He chose physiotherapy because he found engineering dry. Sandeep joined SDM College of Physiotherapy in Dharwad, Karnataka to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Physiotherapy.

After completing his graduation, Sandeep Reddy Vanga worked as a trainee for the Telugu film Manasu Mata Vinadhu in Rushikonda Beach, Vizag in 2005. He worked on the film for 25 days. While pursuing his course at AFTT, Sandeep worked part-time at Subway. In 2010, he returned to India from Australia, and began working as an assistant director under Kiran Kumar for the Telugu-language action film KD. He then worked as an associate director under Kranti Madhav for the film Malli Malli Idi Rani Roju (2015).

He made his debut as a director with the Telugu film Arjun Reddy (2017). The film was a blockbuster and earned more than Rs 100 crore. Despite its small budget, it collected Rs 50 crore at the box office. 4-5 crores. Although the film performed very well at the box office, it was criticized by audiences and critics for its depiction of smoking, drug use, and its kissing scenes.

A year later, he played a cameo role as Vedantam Raghavayya in the Telugu-language biographical film Mahanati (2018). In 2019, Sandeep directed Kabir Singh, the Hindi adaptation of the Telugu film Arjun Reddy. He also served as co-editor for the film. The film starred Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani in the lead roles and was a blockbuster hit at the box office, earning approximately Rs 379 crore worldwide and approximately Rs 278 crore in India.

In October 2021, he announced his Telugu film Spirit starring Prabhas. In 2023, he directed the Bollywood film Animal starring Ranbir Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Anil Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna. Sandeep also worked as a writer and editor for the film.

Kabir Singh controversy
After the release of Sandeep’s Bollywood directorial debut ‘Kabir Singh’ (2019), Sandeep Vanga was criticized for revealing his definition of emotions in an interview. He said,
When you love a woman deeply and are deeply attached to her (and vice versa), if you don’t have the freedom to slap each other, I don’t see anything in it. She slapped him without any reason, at least Kabir had a reason to slap her. If you can’t slap, if you can’t touch your woman where you want, if you can’t kiss, then I don’t see feelings there.
Later, while talking about this controversy in another interview, Sandeep said that people misunderstood him. He said,
What I meant to say was that there should be no barriers between two people in love. I never used the word abuse, which is being wrongly imposed on me. What’s the point of a relationship if you’re not completely honest with each other?”
