Samaresh Majumdar (1944–2023) was an Indian writer, known for writing several famous Bengali novels including Jute Rakter Daag (1989), Din Jai Raat Jai (1993), and Agnirath (2000). He gained popularity after writing Uhithyar (The Inheritance), Kalbela and Kaalpurush (A Man of Our Time) between 1979 and 1989; The novels were part of a political quartet called the Animesh series. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1984 and the Banga Vibhushan Samman in 2018 for his work in the field of literature. Samaresh died on 8 May 2023 in Kolkata, West Bengal, at the age of 79.

Samaresh Majumdar was born on Friday, 10 March 1944 (age 79 years at death) in Jalpaiguri, Bengal Province, British India (now West Bengal, India). His zodiac sign is Pisces. He spent his childhood in Dooars, Jalpaiguri, where he completed his schooling at Jalpaiguri Zilla School.
Subsequently, Samaresh moved to Calcutta (now Kolkata), where he attended the Scottish Church College (SCC) and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Bengali literature. Subsequently, he earned a Master of Arts degree in Bengali Literature from the University of Calcutta. In 1967, Samaresh wrote an article for the Bengali magazine Desh, which was later adapted into a play.

Samaresh Majumdar wrote his first novel Door (Run) in 1967, which was published by Bengal’s famous literary magazine Desh in 1976.
Between 1979 and 1989, Samaresh published three books under the series titled Amritesh, titled Succession, Kalbela (1981), and Kaalpurush. The series was based on the rise of the Naxalite movement in West Bengal in the 1960s and 1970s. For the book Kalbela, Samaresh received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1984. Gautam Ghosh directed a Bengali film titled Kalbela in 2009, which was based on the novel Kalbela.
In 1983, Samaresh wrote Khutimari Range, the first book under the fictional detective series Arjun. In the series, Samaresh published over thirty books including Kalimpong e Sitaharan, Chandigarh e Gandogol, Arjuna Samagra (1-6), and Arjuna Ebang Chinese Cigarette.
In 2013, he published Musholkal, the fourth book under the Amritesh series. In 2014, a Bengali film Buno Hans based on his novel Buno Hans was released. Later, he wrote Satakahan, whose character Deepaboli gained popularity among readers. Samaresh Majumdar published several books including Lokkhir Pachali, Showar, Harameer Hatbaksho, Ora Abong Oder Myra, Bukar Bhetor Bangladesh, Panchati Rahasya Novel, Bondinibash and Kosto Kosto Sukh.
Awards and Honors
- In 1982, Samaresh Majumdar received the Anand Award from ABP Group.

Death
Samaresh Majumdar died on the evening of 8 May 2023 at Apollo Hospital, Kolkata. According to the hospital staff and his family, Samaresh was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) more than twelve years ago. He was admitted to the hospital on 25 April 2023 due to bleeding due to internal bleeding in the brain. The bleeding caused a stroke as well as loss of speech and swallowing (bulbar palsy), which eventually affected his breathing. As his condition deteriorated, he was put on a ventilator; However, he could not recover from it and died at the age of 79 due to cardiac arrest. After Samaresh’s death, his daughter Doel Majumdar said in an interview,
My father is no more. He left us in the evening. His condition has improved a lot in the last two-three days. We were also very optimistic. But today he suffered a major cardiac attack. He did not return from there. The mortal remains of the father will be kept at Shyampukur house for some time tomorrow morning. After this it will be taken to Balighat for cremation.”
