Salman Ali was born on 14 January 1998 (age 23 years; as of 2021) in Punhana tehsil of Mewat district, Haryana, India. He follows Islam and belongs to Mirasi community from a poor Muslim family. He lives in a joint family and is the youngest among his four siblings. Singing is his family tradition and he got inspiration for singing from his ancestors. He joined Delhi Public School, Palwal and left the school after completing 9th standard due to financial crisis. Ali was inclined towards music from a very young age and started singing at weddings and jagrans at the age of 7.

Salman Ali first came into limelight at the age of 13 when he participated in Saregamapa Little Champs in 2011. The financial condition of his family was so bad that he did not have money to go for audition in Delhi. At that time, his friend Manohar Sharma helped him financially to attend the audition.
During the auditions for Saregamapa Lil Champs, Ali sang the song “Sajda” and impressed all three judges, Kailash Kher, Adnan Sami and Javed Ali. He emerged as the first runner-up of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Lil Champs in 2011.
In 2018, after 7 years, Ali auditioned for Indian Idol 10 and sang “Sajda” again in the selection round, gaining her entry into the show. Ali is appreciated for his high pitch singing.
On 23 December 2018, Salman won Indian Idol 10, defeating the other four finalists. He won a cash prize of Rs 25 lakh and a Datsun Go car.

Apart from reality shows, Ali has composed the theme song of Sony Entertainment Television’s “Chandragupt Maurya”. He has also sung in the promotional song “Sab Badiya Hai” of the film Sui Dhaaga-Made in India.
