Sadhna Gupta Yadav was an Indian woman. She was the second wife of Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav and stepmother of Akhilesh Yadav. He died on 9 July 2022 at Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon after suffering from a lung infection.

On July 4, 1986, Sadhna Gupta was married to Chandra Prakash Gupta, a grocery worker in Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh. The couple has a son named Prateek Yadav who is a politician in UP. In 1990, she divorced her husband by mutual consent. On 23 May 2003, she married Mulayam Singh Yadav, an Indian politician and founder of the Samajwadi Party.
Mulayam Singh Yadav is twenty years older than Sadhna Gupta. They officially confirmed their marriage in 2007. Mulayam Singh Yadav said in an official affidavit that Sadhna Gupta was his wife and Prateek Yadav was his son.
His daughter-in-law Aparna Yadav is an Indian politician. In 2011, Aparna Yadav joined the Bharatiya Janata Party government in Uttar Pradesh. Indian politician Akhilesh Yadav is his stepson. Akhilesh is the son of Mulayam’s first wife Malti Devi.

Before getting married in 2003, Sadhna Gupta was in a relationship with Mulayam Singh Yadav. Akhilesh Yadav has said in his biography ‘Badlaav Ki Lehar’ that in the 1980s, when his grandmother (Murthy Devi) was not well, Sadhna Gupta used to take care of Murthy Devi and often visited her house. In one incident, Akhilesh mentioned that once, a nurse was about to give a wrong injection to Murthy Devi, but suddenly Sadhna Gupta stopped the nurse from doing so. Mulayam Singh Yadav was greatly impressed by Sadhna’s caring behaviour. Akhilesh wrote,
A nurse in the medical college was going to inject wrong medicine to Murthy Devi, about which Sadhna came to know because she was present there at that time and she stopped the nurse from doing so.

Death
Sadhna Gupta died at Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon on 9 July 2022 following a lung infection. Soon after her demise, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath wrote a condolence note on his Twitter handle and expressed grief over Sadhna’s death. Yogi wrote,
The demise of Mulayam Singh ji’s wife is very sad. May Lord Ram grant salvation to the soul and strength to the family.”

- According to some media sources, Mulayam Singh Yadav considered Sadhan Gupta as lucky for him. Reportedly, when she came into his life in the 1980s, he became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.
- When Mulayam met Sadhna Gupta, Akhilesh Yadav was studying in intermediate class.
- Before Mulayam’s marriage to Sadhana Gupta in 1994, Mulayam Singh Yadav had given the affidavit in Prateek’s school, in which Mulayam’s name was mentioned as Prateek’s guardian.
- Reportedly, Akhilesh Yadav was not happy with his father’s marriage to Sadhna Gupta. After his father’s second marriage, Akhilesh started living separately. Only the late veteran Indian politician Amar Singh knew about the relationship between Mulayam Yadav and Sadhna.

She was heard saying that there was a war going on between the Samajwadi Party and her during the last phase of elections in Uttar Pradesh because she wanted her son Prateek Yadav to enter politics. While talking to the media, she revealed that Mulayam Singh Yadav is insulting her and her son Prateek Yadav, but she will fight for her son’s rights. Sadhna Gupta said,
Now I will keep my word and will not tolerate the insult of Netaji (Mulayam).
Sadhna Gupta also said in the same discussion that Mulayam Singh never made any difference between Akhilesh Yadav and him. He mentioned,
He has been misled by some people, otherwise he would not have done what he did. I feel bad because of what happened in the family. A chief secretary was transferred and people said I was behind it. “That is a lie, though I wish I were so powerful.”
- Once Sadhna Gupta and Mulayam Singh Yadav had put pressure on Akhilesh Yadav to cut the election ticket of Dinesh Verma, son of former Legislative Assembly Speaker Dhaniram Verma. Akhilesh Yadav had to bow before his parents and give the ticket to SP MLA Pramod Gupta, who is his uncle and Sadhna Gupta’s brother-in-law.
