Sachin Sawant became an Indian Revenue Service officer in 2008. In September 2008, he was appointed as Additional Commissioner of Customs and GST. Sawant served as Joint Commissioner of Customs in Mumbai from May 2010 to September 2021. He was appointed as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to Maharashtra Higher and Technical Education Minister Uday Samant on 10 September 2020. Jawaharlal Nehru Customs House, Nhava Sheva before joining Enforcement Directorate (ED) Mumbai Zone 2 as Deputy Director on deputation. Controversy
Arrested by Enforcement Directorate
In June 2023, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Sachin Sawant, accusing him of corruption and amassing assets beyond his means. Reports suggest that while working as Deputy Director of ED’s Mumbai Zone 2 unit, Sawant investigated a diamond trading company for allegedly illegal transactions and transfers of more than Rs. 500 crores; However, one of the persons arrested in connection with the case filed a complaint against Sawant accusing him of demanding bribe. Upon further investigation, CBI officials discovered that Sawant had acquired substantial assets in his own name and in the name of his family members – his wife, father and mother – during his tenure as Deputy Director. This property is reportedly worth Rs. 2.45 crores was considered disproportionate to their legitimate sources of income. The investigators also suspected Sawant of owning a BMW car and another vehicle through straw owners or benamidars. ED later joined the investigation to trace suspicious money transactions. After Sawant’s arrest, he was flown from Lucknow to Mumbai and the ED conducted searches at his residences in both the cities. Properties of his relatives were also subject to ED searches.
