Sabbhineni Meghana is an Indian cricketer who has played for the Indian national team in many tournaments. She emerged as one of the most talented batters from Andhra Pradesh in domestic cricket by scoring maximum runs in two consecutive seasons. She signed up with Gujarat Giants for the inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in 2023.

Sabbhineni Meghana aka Sabbineni Meghana was born in Krishna, Andhra Pradesh, India. According to one source, she was born on Friday, 7 June 1996 (age 26 years; as of 2022), and according to another source, she was born on Saturday, 16 November 1996 (age 26 years; as of 2022).  She played badminton, skating, and swimming before playing cricket in the seventh standard. She joined the cricket camp organised in her school DAV Public School and was the only girl to join the camp in the entire town. She later joined a cricket academy in Vijayawada under the coach Srinivas Reddy. She attended school regularly till 2008; however, when she was selected for the state team in the same year, she used to go to school during the non-playing days and for giving exams. She is a graduate and holds a Bachelor of Science degree.

Her father worked as a divisional engineer at NTPC thermal power station, and her mother is a homemaker. Her sister’s name is Geethika Sabbhineni.

Career

Domestic

She was selected for the under-19 Andhra Pradesh team in 2008 and trained under Purnima Rao. She went on to play for the Under-23 Andhra Pradesh team and a senior team as well. From 2014-15 to the 2016-17 season, she played for South Zone in domestic competitions. In 2017, she started playing for South Central Railways after coaches Nooshin al Khadeer and RSR Murthy selected her through the Talent quota and started playing for Indian Railways in the same year.

She helped Indian Railways to win BCCI’S Under-23 Women’s Trophy in 2019, win Senior Women’s ODI trophy in 2021, and win Senior Women’s T20I trophy in 2022.

India-A

In 2018, she captained the India-A team in two T20 practice matches against England.

ODI

She played her debut ODI match on 11 February 2022 against New Zealand at Queenstown, New Zealand and scored 4 runs. On 18 February 2022, she scored her first ODI fifty by scoring 61 runs against New Zealand at Queenstown, New Zealand. She was selected as a standby player for the Indian team in the 2022 ODI World Cup held in New Zealand.

T20I

She played her debut T20 match on 20 November 2016 against West Indies at Vijayawada, India and scored 17 runs. She scored her first T20I fifty by scoring 69 runs against Maldives in Sylhet, Bangladesh. She was a member of the team which won the Asia Cup 2022.

She was a member of the team which won the silver medal in the 2022 Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham.

Indian Leagues

In the 2022 T20 Women’s Challenge tournament, she played for the Trailblazers team. In the 2023 auction for the Women’s Premier League (WPL), she was acquired by Gujarat Giants for her base price of Rs 30 lakhs.

Facts/Trivia

  • She participated in a national skating tournament as a child.
  • In an interview, she credited her parents as the reason behind her success. She said that her father played cricket in the streets, which also interested her. She added that her mother used to wake up at 3:30 am and travel with her for 1.5 hours every day to reach the Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium where she practised cricket.
  • She is a right-handed batter and is known for hard-hitting shots.
  • She also played for Board President’s XI team which played Australia.
  • She studied only for two months for her 10th standard board exams; however, she secured 530 marks out of 600.
