It was the place where she had the opportunity to meet Linda Hopper, a member of the Athens, Georgia music scene in the late ’70s and early ’80s. The two became friends and began writing songs together, forming the core of “Magnapop.”
Magnapop recorded four extended plays and three studio albums during the 1990s. They even released two minor hit singles on the Modern Rock Tracks chart, “Slowly, Slowly” and “Open the Door.”
The band also toured the music festival circuit and was able to open for major alternative rock acts such as REM. Their record label abandoned the band and they were unable to record for seven years due to contractual obligations. It was after the 1996 release of Rubbing Doesn’t Help. Ruthie then went to Seattle, Washington.
He then went on to play with the one-off group “The New Candidates” along with Curtis Hall in the year 2004. They released the 7″ single “I’m Coming Down”/“Set It on Fire”. Finally, in 2005, Magnapop was able to release their first album in nine years, “Mouthfeel.” And the reformed group toured to promote the album throughout the United States and the festival circuit in Europe and continued performing and recording until 2010.
