‘Rust’ gunsmith Hannah Gutiérrez-Reed sentenced for fatal on-set shooting

Just over a month after she was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, Oxide Gunsmith Hannah Gutiérrez-Reed has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.

The sentencing comes less than three years after Hutchins was murdered on the set of the western film, which was located at Bonanza Creek Ranch in Bonzana City, New Mexico.

On October 21, 2021, the star and producer of Oxide, Alec Baldwin had been working with a prop gun on set without knowing it was loaded. According to a statement given to the envelope, The gun was among weapons used earlier in the day by crew members to shoot at beer cans with live ammunition. After lunch, the prop weapons were returned.

However, Gutierrez-Reed reportedly did not check the guns to make sure they were free of live ammunition before bringing them back to the set. While he was holding the gun, Baldwin claimed the gun went off. The bullet killed Hutchins and wounded the Oxide Director: Joel Souza.

During sentencing, Judge Mary Marlowe spoke directly to Gutierrez-Reed about his actions during the shooting. “I didn’t hear you take responsibility in your speech,” she said, according to cnn. “You said you were sorry, but no. [that] “You regretted what you did.”

The judge went on to point out that Gutiérrez Reed was responsible for the weapons in the Oxide place. “You just turned a safe weapon into a lethal weapon. If it weren’t for you, Mrs. Hutchins would be alive, a husband would have her partner, and a child would have her mother.

Prosecutors had asked that Gutierrez-Reed be sentenced to the maximum prison time. They cited as their reasoning a “complete and total lack of acceptance of responsibility for his actions.”

The defense had originally asked for Oxide gunsmith to avoid jail time. That team proposed that she be released on parole and argued that she had no criminal record. She also had a “history of previous good deeds and positive things.”

Guiterrez-Reed’s attorney, Jason Bowles, said his team plans to appeal.

Just before the sentencing, Hutchins’ mother, Olga Solovey, issued a statement. “The day he died ruined my entire life,” she said in a video. “It’s heartbreaking to see his son grow up without his mother.”

Souza also stated that he has experienced physical and emotional pain since the shooting. “One day the world made sense and the next day it didn’t,” he said. Oxide said the director. “And it still isn’t that way, and I’m not sure it will be that way again.”

Meanwhile, Baldwin has also been charged with involuntary manslaughter for his actions in the Oxide place. He is due in court this summer. The actor has pleaded not guilty and maintains that he did not pull the trigger.
