In July 2007, Rukmini’s father lost his life fighting terrorists in the Uri sector. Despite being seriously injured in the enemy firing, he bravely led his troops until they defeated all the eight infiltrators. Unfortunately, he died before reaching the base hospital. Colonel Vasanth is the first person from Karnataka to receive the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime military honour. Rukmini’s mother’s name is Subhashini Vasanth, who is a Bharatnatyam dancer. In 2008, Rukmini’s mother received the Ashoka Chakra from her husband.

To honor her husband’s memory, she established the Vasantaratna Foundation. The objective of the Foundation is to assist and care for the families of martyrs, with special emphasis on the wives and children of servicemen. In an interview, Rukmini said,
Essentially, we have one thing in common – loss, but we have built an amazing sense of community. A camp is also organized where wives, children, sometimes grandparents come for a weekend at a corporate team building location outside Bengaluru for a workshop.

During my classes, when I was preparing for a performance, I would journal in character. This process helped me during the filming of SSE, as my character was intense and had many layers.
