News about Ross Coulthart

Veteran investigative journalist Ross Coulthart has left the Seven Network’s flagship news program after a newsroom fight.

Last month, Coulthart intervened to prevent a physical conflict between Sunday Night’s executive producer Mark Llewellyn and another producer.

According to sources last night, Coulthart informed Seven executives last Friday that he was leaving the show.

Insiders claim that Coulthart, a longtime friend of EP Llewellyn who is currently on leave from the show and is believed to have been suspended, was upset by an incident where Llewellyn allegedly pinned producer Paul Waterhouse to the wall at Seven’s offices following an argument over a story. Yesterday, while a spokesperson for Seven sought an official comment from the network bosses.

Longtime friends Coulthart and Llewellyn are thought to have been worried about Llewellyn’s mental health or worried for months before the incident. Coulthart is a popular novelist and a former colleague of Llewellyn on the Nine Network.

According to a TV source last night, “Llewellyn has long been under stress trying to cope with the constraints of a tight budget and the inability of bosses at Seven to green-light stories that need to be launched quickly.”

Ross shared his concerns for Mark with everyone during a time when he saw things coming to a head.

On October 29, as the board of directors across town in the Recreation Area celebrated the success of 2014 and announced the 2015 calendar, tension finally erupted in Eveleigh’s office on Sunday Night. Coulthart, a black belt fighter, is said to have been frustrated with the handling of the case after he himself joined.

Coulthart, a former journalist for Nine Network’s A Current Affair and Sunday, is said to have lost faith in reliable sources last night.

They went on to say that the team at Sunday Night are still waiting for information from management on whether Llewellyn will be replaced. Nick Chan, his employer, has yet to speak to staff.

When discovered, he was considered the most destructive spy ever to reveal American secrets to foreign countries, having given thousands of top-secret American documents to the Soviet Union and then Russia.

These include the names of U.S. sources in Moscow, software tracking cases of espionage, and U.S. preparations for nuclear war. One of those sources was Dmitri Polyakov, more commonly known as “Tophat”, a Soviet commander who passed Soviet secrets to the US in the 1960s and 1980s.

In 1986, Poljakov was arrested and a few years later killed. Hanssen collected more than $1.4 million (US$2.1 million) in cash and diamonds for his treachery, which is attributed to money and intrigue rather than principle.
