Screen Rant: This movie is great! This is my favorite superhero movie of the year. It doubled my love for the first movie, and this movie raised the bar. Grace, Mary was a child leader from an early age. Can you talk to me about how she helped Billy lead Shazamily in this movie and how we see Mary grow in this movie compared to the previous one?
Grace Caroline Currey: She realized how much Billy valued family, the first time he had one. So, of course, he’ll hold on tight. So she sits down and tries to help him deal with his feelings. Because Billy is classic, he only gets away with them for a bit. He escaped from his foster home in the first movie, but in this one, he runs away from his emotions. So she just went to see him and help him deal with the fact that he was getting old and no longer in foster care like she was.
Ross, I love Eugene’s curiosity, it’s an asset, especially when we get to the lair. Have you worked with any young actors to help improve their manners or the way they speak?
Ross Butler: A little bit, yes. So in the first movie, Ian and I had dinner and lunch [Chen] and his family. It’s very cute. I think Ian is a lot like me. I grew up pretty shy, but then I started to come out of my shell and I see Ian now doing the same thing. Just spend time together and get the vibes.
DJ, correct me if I’m wrong, but you’ll be Superman at some point in George Miller-
DJ Cotrona: Are you trying to give me PTSD?
but you will play superman in george miller Alliance justice movie, but in this one you can spend more time in Shazam costume. Can you talk to me about spending so much time on costumes in this movie?
DJ Cotrona: One could argue that in the first movie, our suits were a little tight. We ran into some technical problems trying to make our body parts feel comfortable in certain ways. In the second movie, we upgraded our main suits, which are tailored specifically for our bodies. They 3D scanned our entire body and the muscles perfectly matched our shape. So the suit itself was physically comfortable.
But doing the entire movie from start to finish as a superhero is incredible. It was a childhood dream come true. And do it in a movie like Shazam, the heart of the movie, plays a kid who dreams of being a superhero and actually does. It taps into your ability to enjoy it and realize how lucky you are.
Look, we don’t know what the future of DCU is, but I certainly hope Shazamily is a part of it. I think that sets the stage for it to be part of the new DCU. If Shazamily could team up with any superhero that made it to the DCU, who would it be?
DJ Cotrona: Suicide Squad. I want to see kids forced to stay with psychopaths and try to figure out how to cooperate.
Grace Caroline Currey: I want to work with Batman. That would be fun. He is a detective. I think Mary has a detective spirit.
DJ Cotrona: It’s like a side story.
Grace Caroline Currey: Mary and Batman.
DJ Cotrona: Bat Mary. Maryman?
Ross Butler: I really enjoyed the Justice League cartoon. Mars?
DJ Cotrona: The Martian Hunter, John Jones.
Ross Butler: I’d love to have him, like a weird throw. Literally Martians and children.
Grace Caroline Currey: He heals Hawkgirl. He’s great!
Ross Butler: He’s like this stoic guy. His humor is very dry, or generally very dry, and with a group of teenagers.
