Controversy

Tested positive for dope test

In May 2017, he failed an anti-doping test conducted by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). It was found that he had consumed the banned substance Stanozolol. As a result, he was banned by NADA for one year i.e. from 21 May 2017 to 21 May 2018. During an interview, he talked about the incident saying,

I thought my career would be over. Ever since I came to know about the failed trial, I had been coming to Delhi for the hearing of my case. I really didn’t think my career would ever continue. I felt like I was given a second chance for some reason. I had to prove myself to the world once again.”

Facts/General Knowledge

  • Rohit developed interest in sports after watching his father, who has won several medals in athletics. Earlier the financial condition of his family was not good, so they were not able to buy a javelin stick. After this Rohit’s father made a spear stick from bamboo. Rohit talked about this during an interview, he said,

My father was a player. However, he was adamant that I should become a javelin thrower. But there was not enough money to buy a proper spear. So what he did was he went to a piece of bamboo that grew near our village and used it. Making a spear from wild bamboo was not easy. You have to take only the upper part of the bamboo. Otherwise it becomes very thick. Then you have to sharpen one end so that it flies well. It doesn’t last very long. I can throw it for maybe two or three days before it’s completely destroyed. Also you cannot throw it very far because bamboo is never completely straight. I don’t think I have ever thrown a bamboo javelin more than 30 metres.”

In an interview his father had talked about making spear sticks from bamboo. He said,

I made that spear from bamboo. I had a picture of a spear to guide me. I didn’t follow any established specifications regarding size, weight or anything like that. A crudely made spear was not good for the hands. Rohit used it for two years. This helped them reach state level events, where better javelins were available to the athletes. Then we bought a spear from Patiala for Rs 12,000.

His school principal has gifted him a spear stick worth Rs 12000.

  • Rohit, along with Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra, trains under the same coach Uwe Hohn.
  • In 2017, Indian sports consultancy ‘Amentum Sports’ helped him by providing guidance from Peru-based javelin coach Michael Musselman via video call. While talking about the coach during an interview, Rohit said,

The coach asked me to record my throws from two different angles and then send him video messages on WhatsApp or Facebook. He will analyze them and suggest what changes I need to make.”
