Domestic/State Teams
In his early days, he represented Bengal in the Ranji Trophy and took important wickets for the team. He also played for East Zone in the Duleep Trophy. He chose Bengal because Mumbai had a strong batting lineup, so it was difficult for him to cement his place in the team. However, there were a lot of vacancies for the batsmen in Bengal. He also played for East Zone in the Duleep Trophy. He was chosen captain of the Bengal team in 2001–02 but was not successful in that role. In 2003, in an India A tour match against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, he scored 139 and led his team to a seven-wicket win. His averages in domestic cricket were better, as a result, he was selected in the Indian team for the triangular series in Australia in January 2004 as a replacement for the injured Mohammad Kaif. After the selection he expressed his happiness and said,
“Couldn’t stop smiling for three days.”
In his first match he could score only two runs but took the important wicket of Andrew Symonds.
He made his highest score of 54 runs against Zimbabwe on 24 January 2004, which was his only half-century in his international career.
Later he was dropped from the Pakistan tour. He was again selected for the Videocon Cup and the tour of England where he was ineffective with both bat and ball. In 2007, he joined the Indian Cricket League (ICL) for Kolkata Tigers but the league was later declared unauthorized by the BCCI. Soon, he was given amnesty by BCCI along with 70 other players in 2009. After returning to domestic cricket, he joined Kolkata Knight Riders in the third season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). His last first-class game was in 2009, however, he retired on 9 February 20212. After retiring, he joined his father on the commentary panel. He did commentary in the 2013 IPL season and the show Star Power on Star Sports. In 2017, he became the media director of the Port Elizabeth franchise.
