News Robert Frost
After 88 years of being scrawled at the top of a book, a poem by one of America’s most famous poets, Robert Frost, has been found and will be published next week. Among the unclassed books and manuscripts acquired by the University of Virginia and once owned by Frederic Melcher, Frost’s friend and creator of the publishing trade publication Publishers Weekly, the poem was published by a student. graduate discovered.
The 38-line poem titled “Thoughts on War at Home,” written in 1918, is said to have been inspired by the death of a fellow poet during World War I.
Robert Stilling, a student, claimed that Melcher’s mention of an unpublished poem written in a copy of Frost’s book “Northern Boston” in a letter from 1947 alerted him to the work.
In an article, Stilling said that after reading the letter, “small science alarms” sounded, prompting him to search for the book at the university’s library in Charlottesville. at the age of 88, Frost died in 1963. According to Morrissey, who spoke to Reuters, “you could say that Frost was disturbed by what was happening in Europe at the time.”
Scholars theorize it was created in response to the death of poet and Frost’s friend Edward Thomas in 1917, who died in a trench in France. Frost, who was in England at the outbreak of war and befriended Thomas, wrote poems such as “The Road Not Taken” and “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”.
The poem focuses on a woman watching green jays fight outdoors as she sits in a snow-covered house to observe soldiers in France. Here are two stanzas:
And one said to the others “We must see our chance And escape one by one – Although the war is no more than the war in France.” Then the war is in France! She thought about the winter camp Where soldiers were made for France. She lowered the shade on the window
