Robert Downey Jr. added another award to his shelves, winning his first Oscar for his role in the 2023 film. Oppenheimer.
After being announced as the winner of the Best Supporting Actor award, Downey took the stage to give his acceptance speech.
“I would like to thank my terrible childhood and the Academy, in that order,” he declared. “I would like to thank my veterinarian; I mean my wife, Susan Downey. She found me a snarling rescue pet and you loved me back to life. That is why I am here.”
Robert Downey Jr. then thanked his oppenheimer co-stars Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt. He also thanked director Christopher Nolan and producer Emma Thomas.
“Here’s my little secret. I needed this job more than he needed me. Chris knew it. Emma made sure to surround me with one of the best cast and crew of all time: Emily, Cillian. It was fantastic.”
Downey also said that the film made him a “better” man. “What we do is meaningful,” he continued. “And the things we decide to do are important.”
At the end of his time on stage, Robert Downey Jr. thanked his entertainment lawyer, Tom Hanson. “Half the time he spent trying to reassure me and get me out of trouble, thanks, brother,” he added.
In addition to winning an Oscar, Downey also won a BAFTA Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award for his role in Oppenheimer.

During a July 2024 interview with AP, Robert Downey Jr. talked about how oppenheimer represents the Manhattan Project.
“The context is very critical,” Downey told the news outlet. “The timing of the Manhattan Project, its need, its implementation, whether it is necessary or not; you can read a lot of data that would support either; Regardless, the ‘why’ can be debated, but the ‘here we are now’ is the cold, hard truth.”
Robert Downey Jr. later said that under Nolan’s direction, the film’s team can “invite the audience” to participate in the story.
“We all know the films of the last 50 years that have been important in that sense, as well as entertaining, exciting and simply interesting to watch. And I guess that’s the transcendent thing about certain movies, you know? And so, I have to be in one. Hurrah.”
When asked if there was a conversation about the objective and subjective parts of the film, Downey said: “The way Chris wrote it had to be, in most cases, Oppenheimer subjective experience. So I think that was one of the great, great decisions that he made.”
“By doing that, it puts us all in the position of someone who is just a human being, but has a certain set of skills and may need to be brought to the brink of extinction to supposedly save us from another extinction.”
