Ritu Jaiswal is an Indian politician and member of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). She became the state spokesperson of RJD in 2021 and the state president of RJD (women’s wing) in 2023. Earlier, she was the head of Gram Panchayat Singhwahini, Sitamarhi, Bihar (2016-2021).

Ritu Jaiswal was born on Tuesday, 1 March 1977 (age 46 years; as in 2023) in Hajipur, Bihar, India. His zodiac sign is Pisces. He did his schooling from St. Paul’s High School, Hajipur. After this she obtained a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Vaishali Mahila College, Hajipur. In 1996, she married a bureaucrat named Arun Kumar and started living in Khel Village, Delhi.

On 7 December 1996, she married bureaucrat Arun Kumar, former Commissioner of the Chief Vigilance Commission (CVC). Previously, he served as an officer of the Indian Ordnance Factory Service. In 2021, Arun followed his wife’s footsteps and won and became the head of Gram Panchayat Singhvahini.

An important turning point in Jaiswal’s life
In 1996, she married bureaucrat Arun Kumar and started living a luxurious life in Khel Gaon, a posh area of Delhi. In 2013, sixteen years after her marriage, Ritu visited her ancestral marital home in Narkatiya village of Sonbarsa block in Sitamarhi district of Bihar. Until then, he had spent his life in his urban surroundings, unaware of the plight of rural India. When he learned that the village lacked basic facilities like electricity and clean drinking water, he was extremely disappointed. In an interview, while narrating his experience in the village, he said,
When I had to walk across the river with slippers in my hand to reach the village, human excrement clogging my feet, I could only remember Prem Chand’s stories. My heart sank when I saw the people of these villages living in extreme poverty, children and pregnant women who were malnourished. There were no youth in these villages, only old men and women, pregnant women, children and widows.
So, she decided to work on the upliftment of the village by providing better education to the girls. At that time a girl from the village, who had done B.Ed. After receiving his degree, he was employed as a school teacher in Bokaro, Jharkhand. Ritu lured the girl with a better salary to educate girls in Sitamarhi, starting with a batch of 25 girls; 12 of them passed class 10th with flying colors. Ritu started coming to the village often. She also brought a projector with her to spread awareness among the villagers on various topics like open defecation, pesticide-free farming and domestic violence. Her inquiries revealed that an electrification plan had been sanctioned for the village, following which she rallied the villagers and took them to the electricity office to get the plan implemented. She was successful in bringing bulbs and fans to more than 80 homes in 2015. Happy with the development he had seen in the village, he decided to return to his urban life in May 2016, but the villagers changed his mind and chose him. She is the head of Gram Panchayat Singhvahini, Sitamarhi, Bihar.

In 2016, he contested and won the election for the post of Mukhiya from Gram Panchayat Raj Singhwahini, securing 72% of the votes out of 6500 voters, and became in-charge of the seven villages that form Singhwahini Panchayat – Narkatiya, Khutha, Kaharwa. Badi Singhvahini, Chhoti Singhvahini, Bhagwanpur and Janakinagar. The first challenge he took up was open defecation. She formed a group of women who would educate men and women about the health and social impacts of open defecation. With the assistance of DM Rajeev Roshan, 2000 toilets were constructed in the village and the panchayat was declared ODF (Open Defecation Free) in October 2016.

Other developments he brought about in the village during his tenure include installation of hand pumps in 12 wards of the panchayat, paved roads and collaboration of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research team with the farmers of the panchayat to produce better crops.

To improve the PDS (Public Distribution System), he collected PDS cards of 14,000 villagers from the panchayat, tabulated the details and found that the population required 8,853 units of ration. Investigation into the case revealed that two of the five dealers in the village were allotted more ration than the units allotted at their shops and three others were allotted less ration. Subsequently, a presentation was made before the DM after which the Block Development Officer (BDO) was assigned the task of rearranging the ration allocation. Subsequently, he noticed that some teachers came late to work in nine schools of the panchayat. Instead of training school teachers themselves, he decided to do “Gandhigiri” and instruct parents of children to greet teachers with folded hands and say,
What sir, we have been waiting for you for two hours.” (Sir, we have been waiting for you for two hours.)
Embarrassed, the teachers soon mended their ways.

As a Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) politician
In 2020, she joined the Janata Dal (United) ahead of the Bihar Legislative Assembly elections, but left the party when she realized that she would be given a ticket from a different constituency than the Parihar Assembly constituency in Sitamarhi district, where she had contested. Had held elections. Has been working as the head of Gram Panchayat Raj Singwahini for the last four years. After this she started preparing to contest the elections as an independent candidate, but Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) offered her the ticket. She contested the 2020 Bihar Legislative Assembly election from Parihar on RJD party ticket and lost.

She became the state spokesperson of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in 2021. On 25 April 2023, she became the state president of Rashtriya Janata Dal (Women’s Wing).

- On 18 January 2017, he received the ‘Highly Educated Model Young Sarpanch (Head) Award 2016’ at the 7th Indian Student Parliament by the Maharashtra Institute of Technology (MIT) School of Government in Pune.
- On 26 December 2018, he was awarded the Champions of Change (Award) 2018 by Honorable Vice President of India Venkaiah Naidu at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

- In an interview, she revealed that she was known for her leadership qualities and rebellious attitude during her college days. She revealed that she used to distribute her mother’s sarees among poor women without informing her.
