Facts/General Knowledge
- He choreographed stunts in the American film ‘Resident Evil: Apocalypse’ (2004) and the TV series ‘Fallen (2007)’.
- He also teaches Jeet Kune Do and Arnis under his mentor Inosanto.
- Initially, he intended to return to his hometown to receive training from Dan Inosanto’s academy and open a school. However, after working in a few films he became interested in performing arts. Talking about this in an interview he said,
However, doing stunt work in films was something that always fascinated me and after learning that two of my training partners also shared that interest, we started practicing stunt fighting on the weekends. Because I’m a martial artist, I’ve always been interested in fight choreography. I lean towards choosing performance jobs rather than fight choreography jobs because I enjoy performing more.
- In 2018, he won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture for Wonder Woman, which was shared with the other stuntmen in the film.
- He wanted to play the role of Batman since childhood. Talking about this in an interview he said,
I’ve been wanting to play Batman ever since I’ve been doing stunts. I started watching Batman and collecting comics at the age of 5 and he has been my favorite superhero ever since. Zack Snyder wanted to use me for some promo shots in front of the Batmobile before they started shooting the movie. It was the middle of winter in Detroit and it was freezing. It was the first time I wore the full suit and I was very shocked. I kept looking at my reflection on the ground and looking outside. Jack asked me several times if I was okay because of the cold weather, but honestly I never paid attention. (laughs) Needless to say, BVS has been my favorite job in 25 years of stunt work.
- He considers his father (a basketball player at the University of Cincinnati) and his grandfather (a boxer) as his role models. Talking about this in an interview he said,
Growing up, my father used to tell me stories about my grandfather’s fisting abilities. He traveled up and down the East Coast giving speed bag demonstrations. My father and grandfather were blessed with extraordinary hand speed. So whatever the reason, since childhood I was obsessed with becoming fast like him. Luckily for me, the fast twitch gene was passed down to me. This has served me well many times in my career, like when you have to perform in a big latex suit and still be the loudest person in the room.
- He is an avid dog lover and has a pug named Vader.
