Richa Ghosh is an Indian cricketer who made her debut for the Indian Women’s cricket team at the age of 16, in February 2020. She is also known for scoring fifty-two runs on 26 balls, and the century was registered as the fastest fifty by an Indian batter in Women’s ODIs against New Zealand women in Queenstown.

Richa Manabendra Ghosh was born on Sunday, 28 September 2003 (age 19 years; as of 2022) in Siliguri, West Bengal. Her zodiac sign is Libra. She did her schooling at Margaret Sister Nivedita English School, Siliguri. In February 2020, she broke into the national side, owing to her notable performances in the Challenger’s Trophy 2020. She entered the Under-19 Bengal Women’s team at the tender age of 11, thereafter, she was picked to play for Bengal senior team, when she was just 12 years old. She was named in the Indian 15-player squad for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020.

Richa Ghosh was born into a Bengali family. Her father, Manabendra Ghosh was a club-level cricket player in his youth days, and she used to accompany him. Later, he worked part-time as a cricket Umpire in Bengal. It was her father who stimulated Richa’s interest in the sport, by taking her to the cricket grounds at a very tender age. Richa’s father used to train her as a child and she learned the aggressive batting approach of her father. Richa’s father had to shut down his business in 2016 so that he was able to look after her daughter’s cricket training. In an interview, he said,

I had to give whatever time I had to her. I cannot open a business and shut it down temporarily when I was travelling. It takes 12-13 hours to reach Kolkata. If she is playing in any tournament in Kolkata, I quickly pack my bags. She is a small girl, we can’t leave her alone.”

Her mother, Swapna Ghosh is a homemaker. While, her elder sister, Shomasree Ghosh is a graduate of Media Science.

Career

Richa Ghosh made her Senior T20 debut for her home team Bengal in 2018. She was noticed by the national selectors during the Women T20 Challenger’s Trophy 2020, wherein she scored 98 runs in four matches and played an important role in India B’s journey to the final. Thereafter, Ghosh was named in the 15-member Indian squad for the Women T20 International World Cup 2020, but she didn’t get a chance to play any matches in the tournament. Eventually, she made her T20 international debut on 12 February 2020, at the age of 16, in the final match of the Australia Tri-Nation Women’s T20 Series. In 2022, she became a part of the India women vs New Zealand women in the 4th ODI in Queenstown where she scored fifty-two runs on 26 balls, and the century was registered as the fastest fifty by an Indian batter in Women’s ODIs.

In February 2023, Royal Challengers Bangalore bought her for Rs 1.9 crore in the inaugural WPL auction.
