The Beyoncé concert film, written, directed and produced by Beyoncé, topped the domestic box office with $21 million in its opening weekend, slightly above expectations, via Variety on Sunday (December 3).

It’s one of the best debuts for a concert film, after Taylor Swift’s. The tour of the ages ($92.9 million), 2008 Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Concert The best of both worlds ($31.1 million), 2011 Justin Bieber never say never and 2009 Michael Jackson: This is it ($23.2 million).
It’s the first time in two decades that a movie opened with more than $20 million the weekend after Thanksgiving, which is a notoriously slow time.
The film grossed an additional $6.4 million in 94 overseas territories, bringing its global gross so far to $27.4 million.
Since her film is distributed in AMC theaters rather than a traditional studio, Beyoncé takes home about 50% of the box office profits, exhibitors keep the remaining revenue, and AMC takes a small distribution. The tour itself grossed approximately $579 million worldwide.
