Red, White & Royal Blue’s Nicholas Galitzine & Taylor Zakhar Perez Talk Filming Steamy Sex Scenes & Their Chemistry On & Off Screen

Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez had to make the world believe that they were falling in love with one another while filming their new movie Red, White & Royal Blue. Now they’re opening up about their chemistry and how they pulled it off.

The actors play Prince Henry of Britain and Alex Claremont-Diaz, first son of the first female president of the United States, in the movie based on Casey McQuiston‘s bestselling novel.

The story documents their transition from frenemies to actual friends to eventual lovers. It also features some steamy love scenes.

During a recent interview, they talked about navigating those intimate moments on camera together. They also touched on how they developed that easy chemistry that plays out on screen.

Speaking to People, Nicholas and Taylor explained that it was all about developing a sense of trust.

“Making intimacy super serious can be a bad thing because you get really in your head about it,” Nicholas explained. “Taylor and I, we have enough trust and respect in each other that it was all about always feeling comfort and being able to communicate.”

Taylor agreed, explaining, “It was just choreography. We would be counting in our heads like a dance: ‘Grab one, two; squeeze one, two.’”

He continued, saying “We just brought humor before we tag in and humor after we tag out, which made everything less serious and kept us in that suspension of disbelief.”

Of course, they also took some precautions to make the scenes comfortable for each other. Nicholas stressed the importance of breath mints! “You want to stay fresh when you’re doing these scenes. Lots of making out,” he explained.

In regards to their chemistry, the pair agreed that it was easy and pretty instant.

“We got a sense of each other and realized we had the same sense of humor. It made the chemistry of it all a lot easier,” Nicholas said. Their sense of humor played into the back-and-forth that is part of Alex and Prince Henry’s relationship, too.

“What people love, I think, about the book and hopefully will love about the film is this rapid, quick-fire ping-ponging of insults at the beginning, kind of their flirtations,” he said. “We were always keeping the bit going.”

It turns out that also applies to real life, now. “It’s over once we’re contractually done. Never talking to this dude again. Ever,” Nicholas joked, with Taylor sharing a similar sentiment but teasing a possible sequel.
