Early life and childhood
Rebecca Schaeffer was born as Rebecca Lucile Schaeffer on November 6, 19667in Eugene, Oregon, United States. his age was 21 years at the time of his murder. He was born to Jewish parents, Dr. Benson Schaeffer (father) and Danna (née Wilner) (mother).
In addition, his father was a child psychologist. And her mother was a writer and an instructor and taught at Willamette University and Portland Community College. Rebecca grew up in Portland. Schaeffer was given a small role in Woody Allen’s comedy Radio Days in 1986, but aside from one brief scene, his character was written out. She continued to model while simultaneously working as a waitress. Television producers who were casting for the sitcom My Sister Sam, starring Pam Dawber, spotted her when she graced the cover of Seventeen magazine.
Schaeffer played Patricia “Patti” Russell, a young woman who, following the death of her parents, moves from Oregon to San Francisco to live with her 29-year-old sister Samantha (“Sam”). While filming the series, Schaeffer shared a house with her co-star Pam Dawber. After debuting in the top 25, the second season of My Sister Sam was canceled in April 1988 due to declining ratings.
After My Sister Sam, Schaeffer appeared in minor roles in the films Out of Time, Voyage of Terror: The Achille Lauro Affair, The End of Innocence, and Scenes from the Class Struggle in Beverly Hills. In addition, she represented Thursday’s Child, a children’s charity.
Rebecca Schaeffer – Murder
Schaeffer was passed away on July 18, 1989 at his West Hollywood home by a 19-year-old fan named Robert John Bardo. Bardo had been following her for three years until he passed away. Samantha Smith, a young peace activist who died in a plane crash in 1985, caught her eye once. Schaeffer responded to one of several letters she sent him after that. She visited Los Angeles in 1987 hoping to meet Schaeffer on the set of My Sister Sam, but Warner Bros. security refused to let him in. Madonna.
In 1989, Bardo saw Schaeffer in bed with another actor in the black comedy Scenes from the Class Struggle in Beverly Hills. Apparently out of jealousy, he became angry at the scene and decided that Schaeffer should be punished for “becoming another Hollywood whore”. Schaeffer answered the door while he was preparing to audition for The Godfather III and waiting for the script to be delivered. He told Bardo not to visit her house again after he showed him a letter and autograph that she had previously sent him.
After having breakfast at a nearby restaurant, he went home and returned an hour later. Later, Bardo recalled that when he opened the door, “there was a cold look on his face.”
At the door of his apartment building, he pulled out a revolver and shot him in the chest at point-blank range; according to Bardo, he broke down and only uttered the word “Why?” After being taken to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center emergency room, Schaeffer was pronounced dead 30 minutes later. She was buried in Portland’s Ahavai Sholom Cemetery.
Aftermath
The next day, after people on the highway reported seeing a man running into traffic on Interstate 10, Tucson Police Chief Peter Ronstadt arrested Bardo. He quickly admitted to the murder. The investigation of her case was led by Marcia Clark, known for her work as lead prosecutor in the OJ Simpson murder case.
In a bench trial, Bardo was found guilty of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of release. Federal law governing the disclosure of personal information through the DMV changed as a result of this event. To prohibit the DMV from divulging private addresses, the Driver’s Privacy Protection Act was passed in 1994. Schaeffer was seeing director Brad Silberling when she passed away.
