In the late 1980s, Ranjit worked in plays and television serials for Doordarshan channel. Ranjith made his writing debut with the Indian Malayalam language film ‘Oru Mayamasa Pullariyil’ (1987). He has written the story of the film ‘Orkappurathu’ (1988). Some other films written by Ranjith include ‘Peruvannapurathe Visheshangal’ (1989), ‘Pradeshika Varthakal’ (1989), ‘Pookkalam Varavayi’ (1991). During this period, he worked with Indian film director, Viji Thampi and made some other films like ‘Witness’ (1988), ‘Nagarangalil Chennu Raparakam’ (1989), ‘Kalalapada’ (1990), ‘Nilagiri’ (1991) and so on.
