He served as Surgeon General for two years, until 2017. Additionally, he signed an order allowing law enforcement officials to carry the anti-overdose medication naloxone with them while in office. She was appointed Secretary of Health by the Pennsylvania State Senate in 2017 and served until 2021. As Secretary of Health, she paid more attention to the public health response to COVID-19 in Pennsylvania.
United States President Joe Biden nominated her as Under Secretary of Health on February 13, 2021. She was named a four-star admiral in the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (PHSCC) on October 19, 2021.
