Personally, I’m not part of the system. I studied theater at a liberal arts college in upstate New York. But I’ve always found these young women, as well as the fraternities and sororities, fascinating, and I’ve always felt that these are much more than what we see in the media.
Vice Studios and I met to talk about it, and they said, “We love the idea!” I replied, “Okay, let’s talk more about it.” And coincidentally, about a month later, the University of Alabama created this viral TikTok sensation.
I’ve always thought that digging deeper into the sorority system would reveal a lot about what it means to be a young woman, and Alabama seemed like the perfect place to do it. A general overview seems less appealing to me than going straight to an institution and applying a magnifying glass to it, because I’m a very modern documentary cinematographer.
