- Amrapali case: Supreme Court in its decision of 23 July 2019 appointed R Venkataramani as court receiver. The court said in its decision,
We learned senior advocate Shri R. Venkataramani is appointed as the court receiver. The authority of the lessee will vest in the Court Receiver and he will execute the tripartite agreement through an authorized person on his behalf and do all other acts as may be necessary and will also ensure that the title is given to the home buyers and possession is given. - Hijab controversy case: R. Venkataramani was also involved in the hijab controversy case in the Supreme Court of India. Venkataramani, on behalf of the two school teachers, defended the hijab ban, saying there was a need for public order at various places in the community.

In 2010, Venkataramani was appointed as a member of the Law Commission of India for a term of three years. In 2013, his membership was extended for another term. Attorney General
On 28 October 2022, Draupadi Murmu, the 15th President of India, appointed R Venkataramani as the fifteenth Attorney General of India for a term of three years. He succeeded KK Venugopal and took up the post from 1 October 2022. Expressing happiness over his appointment during an interview and thanking people for it, Venkataramani said,
I am deeply grateful to all those who made this possible for me. There are many of them. And I must also thank the Honorable Prime Minister, Home Minister and Law Minister for reposing confidence in me to handle this extremely sensitive assignment. And I only wish and pray that in view of the assistance given to me by all my friends, I will be in a position to discharge this responsibility without fear or favour, without ill-will and to the best of my abilities “
Apparently, before Venkataramani, senior lawyer Mukul Rohatgi was offered the post of Attorney General. However, Rohatgi rejected the Centre’s offer to return as Attorney General without citing any specific reason.

Venkataramani is also associated with several educational institutions, including the National Law School of India University, Bangalore (affiliated since 1988), the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS), Kolkata, the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES), Dehradun. Venkataramani has represented India in various international events, workshops and seminars related to law. From 4 March to 6 March 2001, he participated in a workshop on the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, 1966, as a speaker.
The workshop was organized by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in partnership with the International Commission of Jurists in Geneva. He has also been involved in the activities of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the African-Asian region, particularly related to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR). In May 2002, Venkataramani drafted a document on the right to food in collaboration with the International Working Group after attending an international conference held in Berlin. In 2008, he was involved in the drafting of the Nepalese Constitution and an experience-sharing exercise.

- In 1975, he co-authored a book on ‘Land Reforms’ in the Tamil language.
- In 1990, Venkataramani wrote the Judgments of Justice O. Wrote a book named Chinnappareddy (former judge of the Supreme Court). This book was published by the International Institute of Human Rights Society.
- He has also written a volume on ‘Torts’ in the series of Halsbury’s Laws of India published by Butterworths.
- R. Venkataramani has published several articles on constitutional law primarily concerned with liberty, human rights and the role of law, and legal education and environmental law.
- He is a contributor to the Annual Review of the Indian Law Institute (ILI), New Delhi.
- He has co-authored Restatement of Indian Law: Public Interest Litigation. The book was sponsored by the Committee on Restatement of Laws – a joint committee of the Supreme Court of India and the Indian Law Institute.
