He has directed and produced more than 26 Tamil films and appeared in more than sixty films as an actor. R. Pathiban is the founder of a charitable trust named “R.Parthepan Manidha Neya Mandram.”

In 1989, R. Parthiban and the South Indian actress Seetha started dating each other when they were shooting for the film Pudhiya Paadhai as a lead actor and actress. In the next year, they got married. They have two daughters named Abinaya and Keerthana. In 2002, Keerthana was cast in the film ‘Kannathil Muthamittal.’ Later, he adopted a son named Raakhi. They got separated in 2001.

As an Actor

R. Parthiban started appearing in Tamil films in 1981. His first film as an actor was Ranuva Veeran. His next successful film was Dhavani Kanavugal, which was released in 1984 in which he played the character of a postman. In 1992, R. Parthiban was cast in the film Unnai Vaazhthi Paadugiren along with the South Indian actresses Suman Ranganathan and Mohini. In 1999, he appeared in a comedy film titled Tata Birla. R. Parthiban appeared in the film Aayirathil Oruvan in 2010 as a supporting actor. In 2015, he appeared in the comedy film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in which he played the role of a comedy villain. He also appeared in supporting roles in the films such as Maaveeran Kittu (2016) and Koditta Idangalai Nirappuga (2017). In 2019, he acted in the film Oththa Seruppu Size 7, which was directed and produced by him, and this film was the winner of the Special Jury Award at the 67th National Film Awards. Meanwhile, this film was honoured at the Toronto Tamil Film Festival with the Jury Award for Best Feature Film, Jury Award for Best Feature Film Director, and Best Solo Act Award. According to R. Parthiban, this film was his dream project, which he was dreaming to direct for the last eighteen years. R. Parthiban was cast in the films Yutha Satham and Ponniyin Selvan in 2022. Some of his successful films include Bharathi Kannamma (1997), Azhagi (2002), Aayirathil Oruvan (2010), Melvilasom (2011), and Otha Seruppu Size 7 (2019).

As a Director

In 1982, R. Parthiban was the assistant director of the film Vedikkai Manidhargal. He also worked as a voice-over artist for the character R. Moorthy in this film. In 1984, R. Parthiban started assisting K. Bhagyaraj in directing Tamil films. R. Parthiban and K. Bhagyaraj worked in more than twenty films together from 1984 to 1991. In 1989, he directed the film Pudhiya Paadhai, which was critically acclaimed by critics. This film was honoured with the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil, Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Film, and Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Story Writer. In 1990, R. Parthiban directed and acted in the film Pondatti Thevai, which failed at the box office. In 1999, his film Housefull was a super hit. R. Parthiban directed the film Yelelo in 2001, and the Indian musician A. R. Rahman composed four songs for this film. The release of this film was delayed due to some reasons. Some of his shelved films are Kartha, Rowdy, and Adi.

As a Singer

R. Parthiban sang the song “Hey Kala Kala” in the film Sarigamapadani in 1995. This song was composed by Deva. He lent his voice to the song “Dey Vasu” in 2005 for the film Kannadi Pookal.

As a Narrator

As a narrator, he wrote the stories of the films –  2B (2001), Athiradi Vettai (2014), Time Enna Boss (2020; web series), and Koogle Kuttappa (2022).

As a Lyricist

The song “Adiye Kiliye” for the film Kudaikul Mazhai in 2004 was written by R. Parthiban. For the film Vithagan, all the songs were written by R. Parthiban. The songs “Kilukilu Payai” and “Wife Love” were composed and written by R. Parthiban for the film Koditta Idangalai Nirappuga in 2017.

Apart from being an accomplished actor, director, and producer, R. Parthiban is an avid writer. He is the author of the book titled Kirukkkalgal – Thamizh Kavithai Thoguppu, which was released by M. Karunanidhi.

Awards

In 1989, R. Parthiban won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil, Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Film, and Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Story Writer for the film Pudhiya Paadhai. In 1997, he was honoured with the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor for the film Bharathi Kannamma. In 2010, R. Parthiban earned the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor – Tamil award.   • On 1 May 2022, during the launch of a song for his film Iravin Nizhal, R. Parthiban was sharing a stage in Tamil Nadu with the Indian musician A. R. Rahman. While interacting with A. R. Rahman on the stage, R Parthiban threw his mic at the audience and Robo Shankar, stating that it was not working. Later, he apologised for his behaviour and explained that he was under pressure and lost his temper. The incident shocked the audience and A. R. Rahman.
