Puri Jagannadh was born on Wednesday, 28 September 1966 (age 56 years; as in 2022) in Pithapuram, Andhra Pradesh. He is a resident of Bapiraju Kothapalli village in Anakapalle district of Andhra Pradesh. She did her schooling from St. Theresa’s High School, Pedda Boddapalli. He received his bachelor’s degree from AMAL College, Anakapalle, Andhra Pradesh in 1986.

His father name is Sri Simhachalam, he died in 2010. He has two younger brothers, Petla Uma Shankar Ganesh, who is an MLA from the YSR Congress Party, and Sairam Shankar, who is an actor.

He married Lavanya on 6 September 1996. The couple has two children, a son Akash and a daughter Pavitra. His son Akash is an actor who made his acting debut in the lead role in the Telugu film ‘Mehbooba’ in 2018.

In an interview, Puri Jagannadh talked about his love story and told how he proposed Lavanya for marriage. He said that he had proposed to Lavanya by giving her his visiting card. He also revealed that in the beginning of their relationship, he was hesitant to meet her because he did not have much money at that time. Sharing an incident with the media, he revealed that once he took Lavanya to a restaurant where she ordered chicken biryani and he got worried about the bill as he did not have money. He further explained that he got married in a simple way in a temple because he did not want to waste his parents’ money on a grand wedding.

In 2011, he directed and wrote the story for the Bollywood film ‘Buddha… Hoga Tera Baap’ starring Amitabh Bachchan, and the film was later archived in the Oscar Library.

ED interrogated
In November 2022, Congress leader Becca Judson filed a complaint with the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against Puri Jagannadh and Charmme Kaur over investments for the film ‘Liger’. According to Becca Judson, the money invested in the film was black. The ED had accused the filmmakers of violating FEMA norms after it found that the money invested in the film was first sent to Dubai and later returned as funding for the film.
Controversial comment regarding marriage
In September 2020, Puri Jagannadh made a controversial comment on the idea of ββmarriage and called it ‘outdated’ on his podcast show ‘Puri Musings’. While talking about marriage in his podcast show, Jagannadh said that if someone wants to achieve any big goal in life then he should not get married. Citing various examples including Lord Buddha he said,
Prince Siddhartha became Buddha only after leaving his wife. If you are aggressive towards your work then don’t get married.
Filed a complaint regarding pending wages
In 2017, Puri Jagannadh filed a complaint with the Andhra Pradesh Film Directors Association (APFDA) against producer DVV Danayya, who had refused to pay him his remuneration. According to some sources, Danayya is accused of giving the pending amount of Rs 4.5 crore to Puri Jagannadh.

In October 2022, after the failure of his big-budget film ‘Liger’, the film’s distributors threatened the film producer and asked him to compensate them for the losses incurred due to the film’s failure. The distributor also protested in front of Jagannadh’s house in Mumbai and threatened to kill him, following which the filmmaker sought police protection. Puri Jagannadh claimed that he did not deceive anyone except his audience. He also wrote a letter in which he talked about the failure of the film.
