The song in question was “Baby I,” which narrowly missed the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100. It was included on Ariana’s debut album. Sincerely.

“One of the songs we did, ‘Baby I,’ was actually written for Beyonce”Babyface told GQ.

He went on to say, “Beyoncé actually… I don’t know if we actually demoed it, but I played it for her. She almost did it. And she finally decided not to do it. And that was for Ariana, who said, ‘I’ll do it.’ I’ll have a leftover Beyoncé.’”

Speaking of Ari, Babyface also recalled one of their conversations about his career.

“The funny thing is that I remember talking to Ariana and asking her what she really wants to do. And back then, she said, what she liked most were musicals. And that she loves Judy Garland. ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ and all the music Judy Garland sang Find me in San Luis. She would sing things spontaneously from that. And you could hear that her heart was there,” she explained.
