Controversy
The former Congress leader was embroiled in a major controversy when the Indian National Congress refused to give her a ticket. According to Priyanka, she was shown on the ‘Ladki hoon, ladki ho’ poster to garner votes from backward class women voters as she herself belongs to the OBC category. He also claimed that the Congress party distributed tickets for the UP Assembly elections only after taking huge amounts of money and they did not want any female OBC candidate to contest through their party. He said,
I am sad that despite my hard work in the constituency, I did not get the ticket for the UP Assembly elections. My face was used in the ‘Ladki Hoon Lad Sakti Hoon’ campaign. I got a landline call and the caller asked me for money for the ticket but I refused. I completed all the tasks but the ticket was pre-planned and given to a person who had come a month earlier. I want to give this message to Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi that such things are happening on the ground.

The slogan of ‘I am a girl, I can fight’ was raised. But it remained just a slogan and could not be translated into reality because a girl was not given a chance to contest the elections. I had worked hard in my constituency. I thought with all my heart and soul that I would help people. But the Congress Party had already decided the candidate and I remained just a pawn for them. My picture is in front of the party’s manifesto ‘Shakti Vidhan’, where the party used me to attract the votes of women and OBCs.
Not satisfied with Congress’s decision, she resigned from the party and entered into talks with BJP. During a conversation with the media, when he was asked about joining BJP, he said,
Maybe yes. I have done a lot of work in the field but the ticket distribution was pre-planned. I was not given the ticket, but I was an eligible candidate.
Later on the evening of 20 January 2020, Priyanka Maurya joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. After entering BJP, when the media asked him about his decision to join the party, he said,
I have joined BJP for a better platform for social service…I was continuously working in Congress…Contrary to their slogan ‘I am a girl, I can fight’, I was not given a chance to fight.

If people say that you did not get the ticket, you will be forced to say the same thing. You investigate yourself and then find out. We were told that we have to prepare for 2024. Congress has not been able to defeat the ‘jumlas’ of BJP.
