Priyam Garg is an Indian cricketer from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. He was appointed captain of the India Under-19 cricket team that will compete in the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.

Priyam Garg was born on Thursday, 30 November 2000 (age 19 years; as in 2019) in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. Their zodiac sign is Sagittarius. His full name is Priyam Kumar Garg. He did not go to school because he wanted to pursue a career in cricket. His mother died when he was only 11 years old. He comes from a financially weak family and he wanted to leave cricket and take up a job to support his family after his mother’s death. However, his father inspired him to continue his training and play cricket.

Priyam’s father Naresh Garg is a driver in the Health and Social Care Department. When Priyam was 11 years old, his mother Kusum Devi died in 2011. His elder brother, Shivam Garg, is a pharmacist, and he has another brother. He has three elder sisters – Pooja, Jyoti and Reshu.

Cricket

Priyam started playing cricket at the age of 6. His father was unable to make ends meet, but since Priyam was very good at cricket, his father contacted the coach of the “Victoria Park” cricket ground in Meerut, and he requested him to watch Priyam play. Coach Sanjay Rastogi saw him play and immediately realized that Priyam was a skilled batsman and agreed to train Priyam for free. The cricket ground was 40 km away from his home, and he took the bus every day with one of his siblings to attend cricket training. In 2018, he was selected in the Uttar Pradesh cricket team to represent the state. He made his debut in “Vijay Hazare Trophy”. A month later, when he was playing in the Ranji Trophy, he scored his first century against Goa.

In 2018, after seeing his performances throughout the year, he was being considered for the India Under-19 team by the selectors, but his form ultimately dropped. The selectors decided to give him time to regain his confidence and form. While playing for Uttar Pradesh, he got a chance to meet many Indian cricketers as a guest coach. He especially remembers his conversation with Suresh Raina. He said that Raina gave him some good tips and he also learned a lot of things from him. In an interview he said-

I learned a lot from him, he was the epitome of discipline in pushing yourself. I learned a lot by watching him. He reassured me, Raina Bhai talked about his growing up days and how at that time there was a senior-junior divide and juniors did not talk much. He encouraged me and everyone else to speak out. It was a nice gesture.”

Priyam considers Sachin Tendulkar as his idol and he wants to meet him someday and take tips. Once in an interview he said-

Whatever I am today is because of Sachin Tendulkar. If I had not seen him play, I would not have come this far. I have grown up watching him. Before every match I think about Sachin. This gives me courage and strength to score runs. Even when I played with a tennis ball in local tournaments, I always tried to imitate Sachin Pa ji’s strokes. My dream is to meet Sachin Tendulkar and take tips from him and one day wear the blue color of Team India.”

On 2 December, the BCCI appointed him the captain of the India under-19 team for the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup in South Africa, as well as India’s tour to South Africa.

The World Cup will be a big occasion. This is the event where you are noticed, everyone’s attention is drawn and I would love to play a big innings there. This is a balanced side. We have been playing together. “This will help us in South Africa.”
